Three years ago I bought a mountain sled with a Bender stage one installed (no head shim). It ran mostly ok but burned oil (i thought in the turbo) and was a little doggy for a turbo. I finally pulled the turbo off late last year and now realize it's real doggy as a stocker. The compression is good and even in all cylinders, better than my other two good running tons. I made a leak down tester and all the cylinders bled down at the same rate (not sure what a good rate is). At one point it would not idle on all cylinders but I swapped carbs with another ton we own and now it idles on all. I checked valve clearance (the previous owner said a mechanic had messed with them) and they were almost all less clearance than spec, but they all had some clearance, so I didn't mess with them. It's main symptoms are a strange, muffled, exhaust tone (i thought it was due to the turbo when it was installed), not a snappy throtttle response, less power, and the smell of burning oil after running hard. I dread tearing into it and just want to rule out anything, easy.

So what are you running for an exhaust? There is no turbo on it now correct? Was the jetting changed at all for the turbo? Is the air intake stock?
