Question for the experts, friend has a new to him 2005 RX-1 Warrior that was warming up with the choke at about 1/3 on and the sled actually left his yard and ran across the road and stopped when it ran into a 2 foot bank, the idle must of raised high enough to engage clutch and travel through a foot of snow and cross a snow covered road , total distance was about 50 yards. Any thing he should look at to fiqure out why his idle RPM's raised like it did?

Thanks in advance

does it idle high always or just this one time? set idle screw to abt. 1500rpm. the weaker holtzman carb springs (blue, silver) sometimes leave the slides hung up,check under a cap to see whats in there. untill this is figured out, start sled on a track stand, nothing worse than your sled going for a ride without you.

Well, the sled should idle at 1500 RPM. If you pull the choke, it will raise the idle. But, it should not engage until 2400+ RPMs. So, ... Here are some things to check.

1. Did he have a brand new belt? If yes, the secondary could have the belt height adjusted too high causing the belt to contact the primary too hard. Then the sled will creep even though the clutch has not engaged. Even at lower than 2K RPM.

2. If the carbs have not been cleaned, they sometimes do not throttle back properly, giving you a run away condition.

3. He did not use any belt dressing, right?

A good rule of thumb is: If you are not sitting on the sled, the Emergency Brake should be set. Also, the E-brake needs to be holding well enough to preclude this type of event. I'll bet few of us actually do that. But, ... until you get this one ironed out and it stays fixed for a while, the E-Brake can't hurt and could save a sled, etc.

Yeah I just pulled one into the garage for a buddy last night its an 05 rx shorty and somebody screwed with it. he bought if off craigs list and never really tried it out. When you start it it revs to 5000 rpms and engages the clutches moves about 5 feet and then rolls back to 1500 rpms. When you hit the throttle after warm up it goes up normally but only slowly returns to idle.

I haven't opened it up yet I am just going to throw in my spare carb rack i am sure somebody palyed with the springs.

X2 on the pilot jet....been there and done that. :o|

:yam: :4STroke: :rocks:

First off engagement should be around 3600 rpm. Get the track off the ground and start it with the choke on full then slowly back the choke off to 0 in about 30 seconds or so. Let the sled warm up and then set the idle screw to about 1500 rpm. If it idles smoothly then dont touch your pilot jets you have some other problem like a slide hanging up or something is sticking or loose in the throttle assembly. Check to make sure your carbs and air box is seated properly as well.

mine does same thing, just like a motorcycle. only thing is on a sled gearing is rpm engaged. i have to stay with it to warm it up reducing choke as she gets warm.

What the heck that is not normal at all rokierx1!

Sounds like the throttle cable is adjusted to tight to have that much power to go through that deep of snow. Make sure the cable as the proper slack, if its still doing it and you verified the carb butterflies are closing then yank the carbs and clean them well.

A clogged pilot jet will cause a high idle but mine if it ever got high enough would engage the clutch and the load would bring it back down to a rough 1500 rpm. Never ever would it have or should have enough power to fly through the snow.

when i first start cold full choke she's ok as she warms up the revs climb, if i don't turn choke down she would surely leave the yard!! hahaha thats not ok huh?
