Hi Im new to the 4 stroke world. I have always ridden an 98 or 99 Skidoo 500 2 up. I bought a 2006 Yamaha Apex RTX this past August. Been waiting patiently since then to ride. Finally rode this past weekend in Ossipee NH. I had alot of trouble getting use to the throttle response. It seems very touchy. I'm fine with it on the smooth groomed trails but when it gets a little bumpy it was very difficult to keep a steady speed. I felt like it was riding in a rodeo. Is there any way I can adjust the throttle response? Any suggestions would be great. Maybe i just need to get use to it.

It will take a bit of time to get used to but you will come to love it.Keep a little throttle into it during deceleration and when going down hills. This will keep the revs ups and the clutches where they need to be for instant response.

X2. It's something you'll have to get used to. It's not a Bravo Transporter, that's for sure. The price you pay for infinite power!

Give it a little time, you'll get used to it. The nice this is you hardly ever have to touch the brakes going into a corner. You can go into in fairly quick and let off a bit and the skis will plant and away you go.....

I loved it on the smooth trails and the power is incredible it is just on the bumpy trails and trying to stay off of the throttle. Also the sled is so much louder than my old 2 strokeGive it a little time, you'll get used to it. The nice this is you hardly ever have to touch the brakes going into a corner. If it's louder, you may be in need of some exhaust donuts on the 2006. If it ever backfires, then for sure you need them. It should have a "different" sound, but not louder. Unless a previous owner did some exhaust work on it.

It may be exhaust donuts, or... he may be referring to the dreaded drone the four cylinder has when you are cruising constant at a certain rpm. Something else you'll have to get used to.

what he said^^^on multiple day rides i run jams thru my communicator to distract from it. As others also mentioned I would check the exhaust donuts and the pipe for cracks as well. You've now got good suggestions, just get the engine breaking figured out then you will be good to go.

The drone is definitely there. I find that I notice it on family rides more than anything. Rides at faster speeds don't bother me at all.

I noticed the droning too my first few rides. I dont mind it as much as I used to though. Its is much worse in my closed face helmet, my 509 set up doesn't seem to be affected so much. I notice it most when caught up in traffic for extended time but its fairly tolerable nowadays..

Jonesynl, it could be that you have a MTX, longer tunnel maybe, who knows. I suspect the drone is rpm, exhaust, tunnel mount related.

One guy in another post said that he tried riding at the same speed with and without a helmet and the drone was not there without the helmet. He thought maybe the helmet was resonating at a certain RPM which would explain why some get it and some don't (different helmets) but I tried putting hand pressure on my helmet when I heard it and nothing changed so I'm not sold on the theory.
