hesitation when throttle is pressed

I started my sled up today for the first time and let it warm up for a good five minutes. When I cracked the throttle hard the motor either hesitates or backfires. Am I not letting it warm up enough or is this something I should have th dealer check out. I will be embarassed if this happens when I want to race someone.
 

The same thing happened to mine last fall when I started it up in my trailer. Mine did exactly as you described yours did. I thought I fouled a plug but when I got it out on the snow for the first ride and opened it up it ran great. Too much pre-season starting carbons the engine up so it just needs a good wide open blast and you'll be good to go. If you let off the throttle too fast and hit it again you can activate you T.O.R.S. and it will backfire.
 
Thanksfor the info. Now all we need is snow so I can let it rip. When I gas it up does it make any difference if I use 87 or 92 octane?
 
what mrance said,dont worry once u get it on the snow and open it up a bit it will it will pull your shoulder blades out ;)!
 
It will run fine on 87. However I usually run 89 just because it says to run 88. Which isn't available unless your in the mountains. Also many places on the trails only have premium. I figure running at least mid will get the sled at a consistant octane should I have to use premium. It probbly makes no difference ethier way but this is just what I do. Also depending on were you buy the mid is ussually cleaner so I figure that can't hurt.
 
The hesitation is normal and it wont do it riding.

I run 85 octane in the mountains and 87 on the flats. In the mountains if I go from 85 up to 92 that the resorts have I notice the difference, it doesnt run as good. Eric
 
If the sled has been sitting for awhile you might want to take a look in the the airbox and make sure that mice haven't taken up residence in there..this is a common occurence and worth a look for the time it takes,but your problem is probably as others have mentioned and will go away with some running.
 
Mine and my buddies Apex's both hesitated when they were brand new. Especially when the engine was not completely warmed up. I mean after running for 20 -30 minutes.

After about the 5th ride, they stopped hesitating at all.
 
i cant remember where i read it but,it was tested the 4-strokes run better on 87 octane, putting in high test was a waist of money
 
RED800 is correct. the lower the octane, the faster the burn rate, thus more power. Compromise is to prevent pre ignition. Generally when going to higher octane the spark needs to be advanced to compensate for the slower burn. Again avoiding preignition. I run 87 octane in my Poo 600 and past 800 and definately found that when I switched the spark advance to "Premium Fuel" using the 87 that I gained some acceleration and a bit on top end over using premium fuel. Where ever possible I prerfer to fill at a gas station, rather than a resort or bar. Fuel on the trail may have set for some great lenght of time, in addition to the higher price.
