A heads up for anyone who runs higher miles with STM weights. I was around 11000kms on this set of weights. Happened while pinned at 185kph (115 mph). Thought I snapped a belt. Weight broke right after the heel part and ruined the sheave.
Worst part about the whole thing. I did a flyby on 2 skidoo’s and a Polaris xcr, dangling the skis past 100mph, and then a few 100 yards past them, this happens. To top it all off, I had to get towed by a Cat. First time in 14000kms the sled has left me stranded.

What were the roller bushings like? I’ve seen a few of these STM’s break like this, but every time it was from the weight contacting the sheave after travelling past the roller. Had those weights started to groove at all further up the cam arm? Those weights would live a very long time in boosted Apex’s with mega HP.

It isn't limited to any particular brand weight from what I've been seeing here and on the FB pages. It's happened on all brands including stock. The common denominator is the Winder clutch

Yup...that stock primary is a POS! PERIOD!
The irony is that it was touted as being all new and improved to match the top level performance of our Sidewinders. But it was nothing of the sort..plain sad.

Agreed, I’ve seen pics of other broken weights/sheaves, the 60y Supertips I’ve just seen with my own eyes.It isn't limited to any particular brand weight from what I've been seeing here and on the FB pages. It's happened on all brands including stock. The common denominator is the Winder clutch

You got towed by a Cat, there the same sled, made in the same plant, that’s why they call them yamacats

Rollers are perfect still. The weight snapped in half and hit the sheave a little. If the weight swung past the roller, there would have been far more clutch damage.

Honestly, these clutches have been good to me. I have my original primary with 12000kms, just the spider buttons were a little sloppy. Pretty mint other than that. I put a new primary on just because I had it lying around, and 1500kms later a weight breaks.

Not much material keeping that weight together.

Just over 11,000kms on these weights. Almost at 14k on the sled but I had a couple different combos I was trying in the early days. From now on I will get new ones at 10000kms, lol

I agree that maybe the Winder clutch isn't the best but I don't see how its gets blamed for the weight failure here. The rollers look to be in good shape.
The " Cat DNA" and "Junk Chineseum" excuses cant be the reason for every failure of every part.

Looking at the wear on the right roller washer, it is plain to see the bushing was worn/shot in the arm and not running straight/true on the roller. May have gone many more miles had the arm bushings been replaced.

Bushings were tight in the arm, so its possible, but I dont think so.

Look at how the washer is worn on the right side in the pic. The weight did that, and it wouldn't do that if the bushings were not worn. I've seen worn arm bushings in a winder before and this is what happens, it wears the plastic washer out on one side.
