I bought ulmers full clutch kit and now when I put it back together the belt rides about an 1/8th inch below the top of the secondary. I was always under the impression that it was supposed to be flush with the top. How do I adjust this?

alittle above is the best. Try a new belt, if that doesn't work get with allen because i'm sure you already have the washers installed on the back of the secondary to close it up.

Did you drive your sled or make the clutches engage after you put it back together before saying that?

yes,,there are small bolts (8mm?) on the back of the secondary...adding a washer allows the clutch to close further bringing the belt to the top...

Thanks, I assume not any ole washer from the hardware store works?

When you are measuring to see how high out the belt rides on the secondary, do you measure from the top of the ribs or the bottom on the belt? I heard you want to measure with the belt just on the secondary and not wrapped around the primary, that true?

belt fully installed...optimally if the sled was on a stand..you want the belt with the valley's of the top ribs flush with the top of the track...if the track barely "creeps" while running thats good....if it "squeals" or moves faster than a min...back off..

also...if you need to adjust because of belt wear...well its best to use that as a backup...

I have always thought the belt should ride just above the sheaves.

Go with the information from any Ski-Doo racing manual - adjusting belt slack instead of belt height between sheaves.

How do you adjust the slack without adjusting the belt height in the sheaves. I though the only adjustment was how tight the secondary closes? This would adjust the belt slack and its ride height in the secondary wouldn't it?

center to center is another adjustment..

Im pretty sure the spec is still 10.57" +- if you were out either way you could move the motor...

Ive only seen one out of dozens out ...

I believe the tolerance is 10.51-10.63. there really is not much, if any adjustment you can make to the engine as for as front to back. unless you lossened the side bulkhead pieces and tried to move it on the bolts. i just swapped my engine over to my new chassis and it basically is where it is. i made an alignment tool for center to center and it was dead on.

Adjusting belt slack instead of belt height is a more precise method that also compensates for small variations in clutch center to center distance. There are many ways of measuring belt slack, depending on what type of belt drive we are talking about and if we are using special made tools or not.
I seem to remember that the method described in the Ski-Doo racing manual is to look for a belt slack of 32 mm. In short, this means that you should put a ruler (as long or longer than the clutch center to center distance) on top of the belt between the clutches and just be able to push the middle of the belt 32 mm down from the ruler. I have used this method for years and this is also the most commonly used method among the factory snocross teams.
