I can not find an awnser to this in the search. It gives a torque spec in the manual for the oil filter. But I tried a filter tool from yamaha and a torque wrench and it cannot fit between the filter and the heat exchanger. How tight do you tighten your filter and what procedure do you use?

I do hand tight.

just like I do every oil filter, I agree hand tight is plenty, unless you are a wuss!
Hand tight is plenty unless you carry a purse and I also wear a nitrate glove to get good grip.

Ha ha love your replies. So I guess I will hand tighten it.

All the oil filters I have ever changed I have went with hand tight. This one being on a sled and the amount of abuse and vibration I subject it to I do just a little more. Usually my hands are a bit slippery when tightening it but I have a rubber strap wrench I use. Once I get it hand tight I use the strap wrench and give it just an 1/8 of a turn or so more. no problems this way.

Being an EMT somehow it has never crossed my mind to use a set of my gloves to get a better grip on tightening. :o| Next oil change I will probably do it this way next time as I can accomplish the same tightness as the way I have been doing it.

if i dont have a set of gloves or filter wrench i sometimes will grab a piece of sandpaper to help loosen a tight filter

KN-147 has a nut...hand tight and a 1/8 turn with a 5/8 open end. A lot of guys around here that had the dealer do it had oil leaks from loose filters, must have some kid doing the changes?

So your saying my European man purse would make me a wimp. Hmmmm. That could explain the leaky oil filter and me falling off the sled at part throttle. :sled1:

Ensure the old seal comes off with the old filter as well, before putting the new one on.. Smear some oil on the new seal and hand tighten.

put it on last night and hand tightened then gave a quater turn with the wrench for insurance.

Its not a purse, its a satchel, Indiana jones wears one......

Couple things to remember IF you use a strap/band wrench to tighten any filter that they most likely will leave the surface of the filter with a scrap mark on the filter and indents the metal casing. If it fails the filter manufacturer wont warranty it and your motor because you tightened with a wrench. The other issue caused with tightening with a wrench is over tightening causing the filter to not work properly from being plugged off or smashed.

and finally... MN has SNOW!! 1-2 feet from Duluth north!

X2 on the K & N oil filter. Use on every thing, very easy to tighten and remove with 17 mm wrench.

I use a filter wrench because I'm so manly that my hands don't fit between the filter and heat exchanger. You're the pansies! LOL
