On Monday in Gaylord MI, I made a turn into a hotel parking lot and there they were. It was a dealer demo ride. They would not let me ride (even though I begged). But I did ride with them. First, I did sit on and start both sleds. The riding area is very narrow, but very comfortable, much like a dirt bike. I got the feeling of sitting high on the sled due to the short and slanted nose. There were 2 different windshields, neither were the huge shield. One was very small, and the other was a medium size. Both attached to the bars, not the body. I could lift the front of the sled off of the ground! The rear suspension was very bouncy, I think if I bounced enough, I could bounce it right off of the ground. The seating position does make it easy to stand. It sounds like a low powered dirt bike or even a maybe a Honda lawn mower. The throttle didn't snap power like my RX1 (this was while sitting on the sled, not riding).

OK, now for my RIDING WITH impressions. I seen it run at 78 mph, but that was the speed of the group, don't know if it had more or not. The first rider was very small, maybe 140lbs wet, he was bounced off of the seat a lot. The second rider was at least 275, of course the suspension sagged some, but it did not bounce him and it ate up the Moguls. In cornering, the Phazers kept up with the others, but I did notice inside ski lift with both riders and both sleds. I watched the heavy rider take a 5' jump at a road crossing, so maybe @ 15 to 20 mph, the sled landed great, on the rear and the suspension did not collapse. The groups were led by a part time Yamaha professional rider, both trips I participated in, the top speed was 75-78, don't know if this was on purpose or not.

I watched the front suspension quite a bit and it just ate up the Moguls, lots of travel. Very impressive.

The Mountain Lite was not there, they were having problems with it. These sleds are "One Of's". They are the same sleds on the Yammie site and videos. The same as all of the shows. They stated that there are NO preproduction sleds yet.

I talked quite awhile with the pro. rider as well as the guy who set up the demo ride, was in charge. They both commented that 2 different companies had taken pictures and measurements for a TURBO and a SUPERCHARGER. The older guy who was in charge stated that the Mountain Lite would not top out over 65mph, and the Pro rider quickly jumped in and said they had it over 80 on the lake. Not sure it I believed him or not.

I noticed also that the colored body panels were like on a quad, the same color all the way through. So plain colors, NO metal flake or hot colors.

So there you have it. I hope this helps anyone trying to make a decision.

Maybe they told him, "you break, you buy".
I cant even imagine how much both of those 2 Phazers are worth, especially if they are the only 2 that are in existence at this time.
Good review, Indy. Its basically what I expected out of the Phazer. Definetely not a lake screamer, nor is it a sled you'd wanna ride 200+ miles a day but for corner to corner and jumping it sounds like a fun little sled.
Im not surprised that the throttle response doesnt match your RX-1. Youve gotta realize because the Genesis 80 is a twin, it gets a power stroke every other revolution of the crank whereas your RX, because its a 4-banger gets a power stroke each revolution of the crank.
There were some pics on HCS of the Phazer with the small windshield. I think they should make that standard on every one of them. Sure, the handguards help but when its 0 F (which really isnt all that cold), Id bet that the Phazer is one cold ride without a windshield.
Hopefully Yamaha will be offering demo rides again next winter. Im looking foreward to trying out a Phazer before I plunk down $7000 on one.
If they do offer demo rides, you can bet that I will be at CruiseFest in Minocqua, WI in February. ;)! The night before that demo ride I will be like a kid on X-mas eve.

i will ride 200mi + on it no prob in the summer i ride dirtbikes all day. it will b just about the same

i rode one and the rep said that the ski lift was something they are working on at this time before the mass produce this sled

I agree on the wind protection comments. There is very little wind protection for the body. COLD KNEES! The sleds felt and looked very small. Seemed like half the size of my Iron.

I am riding an Apex; my son is riding a 1998 Phazer (last year before the trailing arm sled). Does anyone know the horsepower rating of the fan-cooled Phazers, and the horsepower rating of the new 2007 Phazers?

Those were absolutely not "one off" sleds. There are lots of Phazers out there right now, Yamaha is just not ready to let the public ride them yet. I was told by a Yammi rep that the Phazers will be out in full production status for demos by March 1st. I will be riding one at the end of March. Lots of magazine guys and dealers have ridden the pre prodcution versions already and I have sat on one..They are way cool!!!!!!!!! ;)!

Yea I always laugh everytime these guys at a show say "Its a $120,000 dollar hand built proto-type". Like who gives a $hit. The first one of anything is always going to cost the most. They say it like you can't go out and wreck it. Bottom line is they're test mules. So they are not worth a penny. Besides they probably crush them anyway.

Both Yamaha employees absolutley said that they were one off sleds. The driver said he was just out east the day before and drove all night to make it to Gaylord. And they also stated that they had met up with magazines for them to review. I only know what they said, why would they lie?

I beg to differ. Im sure the other manufacturers would love to get their hands on one of those Phazers, think of all the unpatented designs they could steal.
If someone goes out and wrecks one or both of those sleds, think off all the testing time that is lost while they are building another one. Its not as if they have a bunch of parts lying around where they could just rebuild another one in less than a day.
If there are only 2 of those sleds in existence in the whole world, I could see how they could be easily worth $120,000. They might not be worth a thing to you, but to Yamaha and the other snowmobile manufactuers, those sleds are worth PLENTY.
