TY 4 Stroke God
A buddy of mine bought his wife a left over 08 Nytro MTX this weekend. He really doesn't know much about sled setup and he wants me to help him setup the sled for her. The sled will be run at 4-7,000 feet by a medium sized woman.
What suspension settings work best? Front and rear?
What about clutch weights - where do I need rivets? What weights?
Are the clutch weights on the 09 different than the ones on the 08?
Is the stock primary spring the best one for the sled?
Are the stock rollers adequate?
What secondary spring is used and should I change it?
How many degrees should I dial into the secondary?
Huh.......... I almost asked for carb jetting specs
Any help you could provide would certainly be appreciated.
The good things is that riding the sled and dialing it in will help me decide if I have to have one of my own. I haven't had the opportunity to ride on yet.

I picked up a complete NEW 2009 rear skid with the clicker shock. I plan on puting this in and see if the "poggo" part of the sled goes away.......

There's not really any point in clutching it until at least 500 miles as it will keep gaining RPM as it gets broken in.

Frostbite, I'd certainly change the front shocks if she will be riding off trail in anything other than two feet of powder. I put a set of fox floats on mine, but I'm sure there are other options. The sled is way too tippy with the stock shock and springs in non powder conditions.
I'd also check the ski alignment before it hits the trails, mine was way out and I think others had similar problems. These two changes will make a world of difference for her.
The back suspension should work fine for her, but I would give serious thought for some extra wheels to prevent high fax wear.
On the comfort side she'll need hand guards to keep the wind off her hands. You will also want to silicone all the small holes in the front end to keep as much of the snow out of the engine compartment and nose cone. In my opinion prefilter material over the side vents and headlight vents and foot wells is a good thing. She won't be happy if she is driving around with a wet left foot.

If she's riding the hills, it will take her some time to get use to it, but be patient as once she learns to ride it, she'll love it and won't go back to the old style.
Tell her to remember its a four stroke and you ride it different in the deep powder hills, a 2 smoke you can be on and off the throttle, with the 4 stroke you stay on the throttle and just ride her hard.
The Nytro takes 600 to 700 miles to break in before it truly starts to perform.
Tighten the front limiter strap right up, check track tension and loosen a bit as Yamaha has them too tight.
Narrow the skis by moving the spacers and ensure when the front end is lifted both skis point up, if not turn the rubbers around.
Add a Rox 2" riser, she'll be happier even if she's a little shorter.
If you have the time and know how, weld in stifteners in the front sub frame, this site is full of recommendations on that, or check out how they reinforced a new 2009.

Zannydo was right about the rubber bushing under the ski it's amazing how much it reduces the darting. However, I disagree with the need for a riser, shouldn't be needed for a woman, the MTX has a taller riser than the short tracks. I'm 6'4'' and the stock riser wasn't that bad for me, in fact my cousin (6'2") cut his riser shorter. So that would be a matter of personal preference depending on how much you ride standing up. Also, I wouldn't tighten the limiter strap any especially if she rides powder alot. The more you can "carry" the front end the less likely you are to trench and get stuck. I think what he was trying to say about the throttle is that it won't coast like a 2-stroke when you let off the throttle. I takes a little time to get used to the compression.
Depending on how hard she rides the front clip probably will not need to be reinforced.
I have a turbo on mine and I don't remember the stock clutch setup that I had, so no help. Personally, I like Yamaha belts especially if you "break" them in..
In essence just let her ride it and make the personal touches for herself. My daughter loved the stock Nytro.

Thanks guys, your input will help a lot. Yes, he boughtit at the Puyallp snow show.
She's a sled newbie. Her and her husband are empty nesters and frankly bored during the winter so he started riding a couple years ago. He bought a brand new 06 (or was it 07) Apex Mountain and now he is getting her setup to ride with him.
He like to ride off trail a bit but she is more prone to trail ride with her husband and I "trying" her sled to see how it's setup for off trail adventures.
The experience will come for her and she'll get comfortable on the sled after time. She won't need to learn to ride a four stroke, she'll just need to learn how to ride a sled.

Frosty, I read the heading and thought you had bit the bullet and would frequent a new forum! My wife is going to ride my Nytro this year, and I won't need to do anything. For me a heavier rider it was ok stock (stock everything) but for her it will be better being much lighter the clutching should be very close! My wife came from a Phazer MTX so the Nytro would be better for her, more stable more power! She will love it, now it's your turn!

Limiter strap
Thanks Woodsrider, would sure like to have some discussion on the limiter strap, perhaps I'm going the wrong way. I have now been told both sides tighten and now loosen to stop the trenching.
The biggest issue with the Nytro is the trenching and two schools of thought. Tightening the limiter strap keeps the front end down preventing the transfer of weight to rear forcing it to dig deep, or so is the theory.
Loosening it would allow the front to lift, perhaps bringing the weight out of the snow. I felt it was a little better once I tightened it, but I actually didn't try loosening it off? Any thoughts.

In my experience the limiter straps adjustments are a part of a complete rear skid setup. I don't ride a Nytro (yet) but, I typically like the front shock a little stiff (#3 or #4 of 5 clicks) and the rear soft (#2 out of 5 or #1 if I can get away with out bottoming). The limiter straps are part of the balancing act.
Too tight and the steering feels tough and the sled seems rigid and tends to spin out and feels like it has very little traction.
Too lose and it wheelies like a mother. If it's out too far, you'll feel like the sled is riding on a bowling ball under the center of the skid. It will feel tippy with a lot of body roll. Getting the balance just so takes some time and testing.
Just my .02. Now back to your regularly scheduled post........................

I may end up with a Nytro MXT yet but, I signed up for a demo ride for a M-1000 and M800. I also signed up for a Dragon 800 ride, a XP800 demo and a Nytro ride but my buddy bought the one I'm asking about on here for his wife so I should get plenty of seat time helping him get it dialed in for her.
I may end up waiting to see what Yamaha brings to the table for 2010. I bleed Yamaha blue and I'd love to stay on a Yamaha but I know time has marched on considerably in snowmobile technology since my 03 was released and I want to give everything I can a fair shake. An 800 or 900 ETEC in the Summit XP may win over my love?
I was just in my covered trailer digging out one of the three 89 Ovations I bought for my daughter. My son is taking the best parts and making two good runners. It's great to see him excited about building her a sled. One will end up with a 136 x 1 1/2" track and another will be a 121 x 1 3/8" full block.
I traded the kids Polaris XCR120 for a 97 Mountain Max 700. It's not a beauty queen but I bought a take off Nytro MTX rear skid for it with the new 153" Maverick track. I bought some Nytro MTX powder skis as well. This sled could get interesting. I just bought some Wahl Brothers 3.0" pitch 7 tooth drivers.
I'll end up taking the 136" skid off the Mountain Max and putting it on my wife's 99 Phazer 500. I have a MPI rear suspension set back kit that improves the approach angle still in the box and I'll run a 141" Yokahma or a 144" Challenger on that sled. I have a transfer enhancement kit coming for that sled.
I do have access to another Nytro MTX skid and track for a song and I MAY just end up putting this second 153" Nytro skid under the Phazer 500 with the 153" Maverick. That would be cool as heck. Then I'll need one more set of Nytro MTX skis.
I really need to get crackin on these projects but it's too nice outside now and hunting seems to be getting in the way.
