I have also posted this on the Amsnow Racing Forum.
I have never been to the shootout but listening ang lurking a little on some different "sledhead" boards has brought a little closer to the true understanding of the "MOD" class.
Now you have to understand that to a guy like me "MOD" means a full blown OPEN MODIFIED dragster. Now with a better understanding, I would like to propose an idea that will make these "Trail Mods" more consistent as I understand in years past that some folks have shown up with "trail" sleds that were questionable at best as to their trailability. Here is what should be done:
Like we do with our World Quickest Streetbike Shootout class, take the sleds on a predetermined 10-20 mile trail course with a pace sled in front and a pace sled it the back of the pack. The front and rear pace sleds should be pretty powerful and setup well for the bumpy, ditchy, maybe muddy, snow powdery, hilly, fast, flat trails that this predetermined course will comprise of. All the entries have their riders on them. The front pace sled leaves with all the entries following. The pace is fast!...BUT, you cannot pass out the lead pace sled, yet you cannot be passed by the rear pace sled. If you survive the let''s say 20 mile grueling course with the varying and ever changing terrain types, you return to the "pit" area and shut the engine off, then have to be able to restart within 30 seconds, thereby proving the "trailability" of the entry. The engines then get sealed and you are now allowed to enter the race if you succeed with the "trail course" and restart procedure.
I''ll bet this will require those that have shown up with trail questionable equipment to plan their strategy and building a little bit differently.
Thoughts anyone?

An excellent collection of ideas Freddie, I doubt if anyone will listen tho.
But maybe they will, as this year there were many less shops competing than in past years.
Off the top of my head, those missing were....
Crank Shop
Dyno Port
PSI
And others
I am willing to help some with this venture as well, but as with you it would need to benefit my buisness a little as well.
Last year was the only year in the history of this event that I did not attend.

Seems that way given the fact that this has been posted a few days and you were the first one to respond.
Freddie
If you want to really find out the feasibility of this venture, you should contact Jerry Basset @ american snowmobiler.
He and Jim Czekala are basically in charge of the shoot out portion of the weekend event.
