idler wheels on rs venture

No need to apoligize hondo....great post!
I took the same tact as you did only I got my lame torsion springs changed for the heavier 3000nm at their expense.

Glock 30,

I did too, with the heavier springs.

You have probably read some other posts with me rambling on about Yamaha building a "total package" bullet proof sled.

I am waiting for the next demo rides near here. I have some specific questions for them.

We should not have to go through this BS just to make the sled the way it should have been made the first time from the factory.

Thanks, ;)!

Talked to my dealer. The wheels are Kimpex wheels for Polaris:

Kimpex wheel Part# KX 411667 6 wheels (4) inside and (2) outside.

He said some machining is required. I'll have to take a closer look at mine.

Again the wheels are 1/8" larger OD.

The marginal snow wheels are also part of the set up to reduce Hyfax wear.

Dealer eluded to the the fact the he and his maintenance guys found this set up that helps significantly.

He also said that Yamaha was coming out with some better wheels what ever that means.

Folks should probably be persistent at their respective dealerships.

I plan to to run this sled in excess of 20,000 miles to see how durable this machine really is.

Guess I'd better get going! ;)!

Hope this helps.

Hondo, correct me if I'm wrong, but I beleive you are not studded. I'm studded and this changes the argument with Yamaha, at least it did for me. Yamaha starts blaming the studs, now we all know that's BS, but they start quoting some passage in the manual about modifying the sled.

I did exchange emails with your dealer about the Polaris wheels and here's what he proposed -

HI JEFF,

WITH THE BOGIE WHEEL UPDATE THAT WE DID FOR MR. BOB DAVIS, YOU WILL NEED 6
KIMPEX (POLARIS) IDLER WHEELS ($18.99 EA. W/BEARING), MACHINE YOUR EXISTING
SUPPORTS TO ACCOMODATE THESE NEW WHEELS AND THE MARGINAL WHEEL KIT FROM
YAMAHA ($69.95 EACH)

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEND US YOUR WHEEL SUPPORTS TO MACHINE WE CAN DO THAT
SERVICE FOR YOU. ALL PARTS AND SERVICE WOULD BE A TOTAL OF APPROXIMATELY
$300.

SINCERELY,

BOB 207-834-5505

PS. THIS WOULD BE A VERY GOOD UPGRADE FOR YOUR RS VENTURE !!
Bob Bonenfant [rogerssportcenter@hotmail.com]

I beleive I will be taking him up on this at the end of the season.

Maddogjeff,

Correct I am not studded.

I spoke with Bob yesterday, he told me 4 wheels. I just got back from riding and counted 6 wheels.

I need to edit my previous post.

As I said before it works for me, the wheels are doing well.

They will do a good job if you have it done. ;)!

Sorry for the confusion.

Hey Hondo, now that you've had some riding time on these aftermarket wheels, how have they held up? What shape are the front inner iclers in? Track howl? Slider wear?

Grimm,

The POO wheels have held up real well. :D

They were installed at 1,750 miles and now have 12,001 miles on the sled.

The rubber is near perfect. I have replaced 2 bearings at the beginning of the season (5,720 miles) and 1 bearing toward the end of the season(11,700 miles). To me this is "normal maintenance" with regards to the number of miles ridden. More than acceptable.

I am very pleased with this upgrade. It has made the most significant difference for the 05 RS Venture. This upgrade has extended Hyfax wear to the tune of 10,251 miles on this set of slides, plus has significantly reduced track howl noise.

I do have some solid aluminum billet asphalt drag race wheels coming to replace my marginal snow wheels. I want to run them next snow season before commenting.

The marginal snow wheels do get trashed pretty easy late in the season hitting ice chunks etc., thus the idea of using aluminum.

All the maintenance trends can be read in my RS Venture 12,000 Mile Report, at the top of the RS Section.

Hope this helps. ;)!

Hondo, where exactly on the rails did you install the marginal snow wheels?

thanks

Hondo, sorry I found it. I should have looked closer at your report. Any issue with slider wear ahead of the first set of idlers at the front or between idlers?

62crusr,

No wear issue in front of the idlers. My slide wear always tapered to the rear. I don't have my limiter straps tight at all.

The most wear I have ever noticed is the last 12"-18" of the slide. My marginal snow wheels are placed 9 1/2" ahead of the rear axle.

The oversized POO wheels provides just enough stress, or weight relief to the track which relieves slide pressure and allows the slides to wear to a point where they wear very, very slowly.

Hope this answered your question. ;)!
