Hello,
I am in the process of planning out the turbo build on my 08 nytro for after the season ends.
The idea is to be a trail rideable 180-190hp at sea level running 5-7 pounds of boost with stock motor, components and t25 turbo.

Recently i purchased pieces from a RX1 Bender Kit that was never installed which included a new intercooler core only, no tanks/plenum.

Core measures 10 inches wide, 6 inches tall and 3 inches deep. With the tanks/plenum installed I would assume it to be 10-11 inches tall.

So now my question, I have done a ton of research and it seems more people are running without intercoolers then with them on this type of set up.

Since i have it and need to fab up an intake plenum would incorporating this into the build be an issue, over kill or am i better off not using it?

Because I believe the core to be on the small side, I am concerned about heat soak and significant pressure drop at the intake manifold.
I should also mention i am also running a finned pre cooler tube in the tunnel, so I believe this would help with some of the heat soak concerns.

Finally, anyone have any picture they want to share of their turbo mount/oil reservior set ups?

Thanks in advance for any input or advise .

Any good FI builder will say if you can fit a IC, afford a IC, and size it correctly ALWAYS run a IC.

Not having one cuts cost and time but at the expense of safety margin. It may work but if you use the boost calculator I have mine set up to run on 90.1 octane but run 91, without a IC you might need 91.1 and run 91 or worse need 92-93 and run 91 or get a diluted tank of fuel thinking its 93 and its actually 91. Then boom.

I would say your better off using it, at those boost levels it wont be a restriction and it will add a few ponies as well.

First off I think I purchased the header and exhuast from you on CL as we spoke then I was building my own turbo set-up using a mits 16g. Well she's up and running and seems to be working really well.

The issue with IC is they can get heat soaked and actually increase air temps not decrease them. This is more noticed on mtn sleds with there wide open but not much ground speed.

With that low of boost I dont think I would mess with an IC they take up room under the hood and with out removing the radator you wont get suffecinet flow across it. This is my opioion thou.

Here is some pics of my homebuilt 16g set-up. Few things have changed since the pics and I have cleaned up and anodized some other things.

This is after it was all built then taken off to finish welding and do some clean up before final fitment.

Turbo in place with the oil tank. Everything is rubber mounted to help in chassis flex.

2" charge tube and plenum designed in Soildworks for the best flow in the area that I had to work with.

I used the Vacuum from the dry sump to suck the oil back from the turbo this works really well. Tested the system and at idle the crankcase has 15inhg.

Let me know if you have any questions or would like me to fab some stuff up.
O yea a video. It a little quitter then I would have choosing but I kind of like the sleeper sound to it. With out the snorkel out the back you really can tell it turbo-ed.

intercooler

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you guys and thanks for the input.

I was I thinking along the same lines as Kinger on this as well.
Between riding in Mn, Wi and the U.P. I never know for sure the quality of gas i am getting and the IC would afford an additional layer of protection in that regard.

And Mike you were right about the exhaust. 5 minutes after you left i started researching everything we talked about and regretting selling my header!
I am really inpressed with what you put together and the kit looks awesome.

I'll get a hold of you in a bit and follow up on our conversation.

Thanks again guys.

If (ok when) I turn the boost up I will either do a Liquid to air or a air to air but it will be in the back of the sled with where the snow will kick it up. When I was into the 2-stroke turbo thing I was amazed at how much an IC changed the way the sled would perform.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Mike
