Hi everyone, I'm new here and I'm hoping you can answer some questions I have.

I am looking to purchase an ATV for myself. This is the first machine I will have bought, or done any vast amount of riding with.

After looking at all the various brands and models, I have decided on a newer Big Bear 400, with IRS.

My usage will be almost totally trail riding. I realize that this machine is more of a utility/workhorse, but I have my reasons for liking it.

What I like about the machine is it's "simplicity", manual shift, full-locking diffs and IRS. I also like the fact that it is a midsized machine, not a goliath trail monster.

I will very likely be purchasing used. What, if any are known problems with this machine? Things I should look for and be aware of.

What is considered high mileage for this machine?

There does not seem to be many around, used or new. Are they just not popular, or do people tend to hold on to them?

Thanks for your help!

PS: I posted this same thing over on ATV-forum.com, and there's been hardly anyone look at it. Hoping for a better turn out here!

well,l that is the model that guys tend to buy and keep for a long time. the atv in my signature is the predecessor to the one you are looking at and i plan on keeping it for a long time as they are bullitproof with minimal maintenece for long periods. i have only had a few small problems with mine. the ones i had where the front caliper banjo bolt loosened on a branch and i seem to vibrate the rack/plastic bolts out.

my uncle has a 1992 that is still going and it gets used hard all the time. when i repair it, usually the parts i take off are just plain worn out but it still is going strong.

i have seen some similar used ones around here with 8-10,000 km on them that where used by companies running pole lines and logging roads that they still ask $5-6000.00 for.

they only issue that you might run into is if it is loaded heavy/pulling hard, the back axles can pop out of the diff. they did improve the snapring that holds them in so it is a rare thing to happen but it stiil does.

all i can think of. hope you find one!
