Hey everybody, any help on this would be great. Here's what happened. I broke both my limiter straps on my 09 xtx. When this happened the rear shock rotated around the lower mounting shaft locking the rear skid and bending the two support bars on either side of the shock. I replaced the straps, straightened the bars and thought I was good to go. I took it out today but the rear is really springy with no dampening rebound at all. I figured my shock was toast. I took it out expecting to find it really soft. What I found was it's still very hard to compress, but rebounds really all slow. Not sure if it’s done or if there's another issue somewhere?? Any thoughts??

^^That's my thread from a few years ago.
Exact same thing happened to me. I got lucky and when the two bars broke, it loosened the nut connecting the rubber hose between the shock body and the reservoir. To be honest I'm surprised we don't see more of this. Such a BAD design on yamahas part.
It needed a re-charge and was good to go.
I made up a safety tether, check my limiter straps b4 every ride now, but the best solution is Star Suspensions front shock mod where he installs a spacer inside the shock to limit the travel in-case the strap ever break, it will prevent the invert.

thanks for the reply. I'm just not sure that the shock is blown. The sled behaves indicating it is, but when I removed it its stilll hard to decompress, and very slow to rebound??

it was probably like that before and you just didn't notice. If I press the rear of my XTX down it stays there too.

When I rode for a few days with my shock blown, you could really tell it was gone. The suspension bottomed quite easily, and just sitting on the sled it sat a lot lower to the ground. Just jumping on the sled i could pretty much get it to bottom. I had to be very careful when riding it.
However, all stock XTXs stay down about 4-5" when you push them down. Its due to the friction in the transfer slides. This is normal. If this is all you notice, I bet your shock is fine. Its quite noticeable once the shock goes.
You say the rear is really springy, so I would yes your shock is blown.

That's the strange part, the sled now sits higher with no sag anymore, where it used to stay as you described. It still seems relatively stiff, but pogos terribly. It bottoms out on everything and springs back quickly.

Shock is blown. [Perfect description of a blown shock above.]
