Why does an apex with reverse take so much less chain case oil than one without reverse??

Anyway, I filled my chain case a little too full. Its in between the marks for the standard apex, and way above the marks for the reverse. Should I try and get some out or is it ok to run as it is???

chain case oil

Was just doing that to my sled yesterday,I check with my local dealer mecanic and he said that on a yamaha trainning they told him to put 250ml or 1/2 a cup of oil in the ones with reverse all most to the std mark.
It's because there is not enough oil going to the top gear at high speeds.

The reverse chaincase cover is bigger, and thus the same amount of oil doesn't fill it up quite as high.

As for overfilling... won't actually hurt anything, though it could slightly rob you of top speed. Its just a chaincase. If there's really too much, it'll just puke out the vent and make a bit of a mess.

True and it will cause more heat as well meaning you may smell hot oil after a long lake run. Will it hurt anything I doubt it unless you really over filled it.

chain

Sorry it was 1 cup .

I run both my apex's to the STD mark on the dipstick. (reverse in both) if you look at the volume of your chaincase vs. the volume of gear oil you use there is quite the difference. if you keep it to the std mark you will be fine!!! i usually use a good quality 80w90 then use a bit of lucas in it. makes the oil very "sticky" and if you tare apart your chaincase you can see the chain and gears are coated with a film... I've put thousands of miles on doing this with zero probs...

If you have oil to the std mark you have 1 cup of oil in it,I measured it after a oil change. And I add 2 teaspoon of Bardahl Oil 1 you can et this at any auto parts.I have been using this for 25 years and never add to replace a chain.Four tablespoon with the engine oil change and two in the chain case.

Always filled the RX1 and Attak to the full std mark. both have reverse, 9,000 miles or so on each with no problems

Agreed, I always fill mine to Std, as does my local dealer.

250ml as posted on your belt cover...
