Recently i started to go snowmobiling on my brother in laws artic zr700. The sled is fast and handles pretty good but i hate how you just smell the oil burning. I've been considering to buy a 03 or a 04 rx-1 but keeping hearing bad things about them from my brother in law and his friends. Personally i think the yamahas are the nicest looking sleds out there plus the dual pipes looks awesome. So is there any reason to hesitate buying one of these yamaha rx-1's and if so why??HELPPPP[/b]

Everyone has an opinion based on ther own preferences. To get the best information to allow you to make an informed decision, spend time on this site and review many of the threads in the RX-1 section. Personally, I favor the Yamaha sleds, have owned/ridden them since 1990. They are a good combination of looks, performance and reliability. Like all mechanical devices, sleds need periodic maintenance. Any sled, if abused or not maintained will fail. You also need to consider you riding style and what you want the sled to do. A stock RX-1 cannot "do it all" well without specific modifications but can be setup for any application from deep powder riding to lake racing. Poke around on this site, post your questions, the members of this site will be happy to answer.

What specific negatoive comments/concerns do you have about the Rx-1??

Well my worries are they say the frames are weak and engine repair is over priced on them. My style of riding is pretty tame and typically ride on groomed trail with slight bumpy conditions, but if the flats are there i like knowing i have the power to rip it!

I love my 04 Warrior (RX1 136 Track) just needs to be tweeked the way I like to ride.

If you want something that will try to pull your arms off go for the for the RX1.

The only thing I can say bad about the RX1's is the proaction Skid has had a few problems with the W arm on the front of the skid cracking and needs a 13mm swaybar.

if you are going to go rx-1, look for an 05 with a mono shock. dont worry about what people say about yamaha's especially if they are riding arctic cats or ski doos. i've never heard anything about weak frames?????

So would you guys recommend this sled for a newbie in the sport?

My Warrior is my first Yamaha and I love it. I was a Skidoo lover but the motors you cant kill (unless you don't do routine mant.)

There is a 2005 Yamaha here that has 36,000 miles on the ORIGINAL motor no major work done to it.

So in my opinion go for it you wont regret getting it.

Oh for real so you recommend an 05? I've seen a 04 rx-1 with a M-10 suspension 144 studs hauk muffler bendar clutch set up apex seat upgrade with 4k miles for $3950. Would you say that suspension is any good? :rocks:

I love my 03 RX-1 and you'll hear more complaints from people who don't own one than from people who do. Granted the 05+ mono-shock rear suspension is better than the Pro-action in the 03-04 models but I wouldn't turn down a good deal because of it. Once I went through and setup the rear suspension to my riding style it really performed very well. I am still working on flatter cornering since the inside ski comes up easily in the corners but that is an easy fix also. The stock "finger" camoplast predator track on the 03's is junk for traction in anything loose but is great for high speed packed trails. I added 144 studs up the middle and it helped a lot, it still sucks in the deep stuff but I haven't got stuck yet.

Keep in mind 2003 is the first year of these sleds so some were problem-matic, some burnt out exhaust gaskets early, a few burned oil and needed new rings and some had weaker than normal rear suspension rails. I have lucked out so far with no major problems with my sled other than needing to clean the carb jets as they are very small, from now on I will not store it with gas in it.

The RX-1 is a great sled for your average rider and pretty maintenance free besides an oil change or two per year, which is not very difficult with a few basic hand tools. I love the fact that I do not add $40/gal oil to it every other gas tank like my old XC800 and I do not smell like oil after every ride. The best part is that I typically get 15-17mpg where my fathers XC800 gets about 9-10mpg.

First of all i have to say you guys really rock and so does this site for responding so promptly to my concern here.

LMAO. They're just trying to justify paying money for the junk they have.

Frames are definitely NOT WEAK. The frame on an RX1 is stronger than that of ANY other sled out there, including older and newer Yam sleds.

Engine repairs *are* expensive, but the key point to think about is how many engine repairs will be needed compared to other sleds. This engine has much more in common with your CAR than it has with your brother in law and his friends' weed whacker sleds. Their engines will need to be rebuilt every 5000 or so miles.... IF THEY'RE LUCKY. In all probability, an RX1 engine will go 25000 miles before needing anything more significant than regular maintenance, like oil changes and spark plugs. FYI: 25000 miles is the first scheduled maintenance -- valve adjustments.

If you are looking at the RX-1 go for a '04 or newer. There were over 110 changes made to the 04' to improve on the '03. I like my '04 so much, I would hate to give it up for a new one. But then why would I give it up. It still runs and looks very nice. Still solid as a rock after ~10K miles.

Sounds good guys. The only thing left now is i need to find me a good deal on a 04 RX-1 in the Michigan area!!

I hear it all the time, that thing is a pig, you actually going to go off trail with that, nice rx - 1 ton, blah blah.

Bottom line EVERY time I hit the throttle I fall in love all over again. The sled rules.

Its not without it faults in the handling department but new springs, larger sway bar, and getting familar with the adjustments and they do really well. Start throwing money at it like I did and they start to handle REALLY good, guys with feather light ski doos actually comment geez you really ride that thing, etc

I should have sold mine long ago but I just cant part with it. Mine in silver is my absolute favorite color combo and its just my personal opinion but it looks better then any new one I have seen.

They do show thier weight at times but I also run over small trees with it and nothing ever gets bent. Mean while a ski doo has $500 in damage and 10 hrs to repair.

My only reccomendation is to not HATE it when you jump on and try to turn, I did but I slowly learned how to ride it and how to set it up with the help of the great folks here on TY and viola I have MY dream sled and in the end that is all that matters.

I Love my 05 RX1 it has held up great.maint. has been easy.I bought my sled late dec.05,every year I use stabil for summer storage I have had oil changed,filter,(06) had the carbs cleaned once late 06 and I think I need exhaust gaskets replaced.but I rode recently in the up and she was perfect Oh I changed Batt.over summer, and replaced spark plugs before my last trip(late Jan.)recently I noticed my exhaust sounded different(very slight backfire) when I got out of the throtle I have not noticed any lack of performance.I will have the dealer look at it This sled will pull your Arms Off.It is fun but it is very easy to trail ride all day,But if you play hard it will wear you out I lost a day of riding because of how sore my ageing body was the next day after 8 hrs. of the hardest riding/playing/racing busting thur drifts at full power wore me out man Love it!!!
