For the first 3200 miles my 03 used just over one quart of oil. My usuall riding is fairlynarrow trails with speeds from 35-75 mph and some WFO lake running. In these conditions I would check the oil level every 1000 miles or so.
Now, last week I was riding in "the county" in north most Maine. Riding was fast and flat, we were running 70-100MPH+ all day this equates to 8000-10300 rpm's all day long. After 350 miles of this high speed running my oil light came on. It took 2/3 of a quart to fill it up. I am totally convinced that oil consumption is caused by crankcase oil vapor getting sucked into the intake at sustained high speeds.
On a seperate note I was getting nearly 16mpg on my trip
and a quart of 5w30 @ $2.00 is way cheaper than my riding bud's $8.00 a quart KLOTZ every 100 miles and I used 5$ less gas every 75 miles too
His sled is 05 F7 SP

Have you got slits cut in the crank case vent tube where it runs inside the airbox. If this oil consumption came on all of a sudden, I would think the chances of the vent freezing solid were pretty good..... especially if it quits using oil on your next trip.

Just add oil and forget about it. I hope you can think of more important thoings to worry about.

Don't be silly..... no oil use to having the light come on in 350 miles?

I am going up to Hammer down the rail beds. My Warrior has not used any oil in it's 4000 miles with the ecp kit. I will see if it uses any on the wot runs for 20 miles at a time.

My breather hose does have the releif slit. Basicly what I am saying is I feel the oil use is caused by extended use a max rpm. I am not worried about it at all, I will just plan to cary a small jug of oil on bagger trips on fast trails from now on.

Why do you think Yamaha redesigned the crankcase for 2006? There is now an elaborate baffle box venting system. They did this because why?

Litre of oil fits perfect under the tool kit. The flat bottle that Yami sells. Never needed it but I carry it.

When I started this season I had 2,700 miles, two oil changes and the light never came on. I now have 3,500 miles on and I have used a quart of oil and the oil light came on twice during that 800 miles. I hope that this is not a sign to come. What should these engines use for oil. I have heard some say not a drop to 1 quart per thousand miles. What is deemed to be excessive?

These motor will use some oil. No big deal! I had a 2000 Chevy LS1 that would use about 1 Qt. in 1,000 miles!! Chevy told me it was fine. I was not happy but the car made great power on the dyno so i did not care. Now if the Ls1 motor had a clutch on the crank and you had to spin it 6,000++++ all the time like a sled motor i bet it would use 1 Qt. in about 50 miles! As long has my sled is pulling the same RPM.(making the same power) Every time i ride it, it can drink some oil!
Skydog P.S. With 0-30 that oil is so thin to flow at cold times. If we could run a 15-40 i bet the oil lose would be all most gone. But we can not!
