03 RX1 10,200 miles - oil burning fix

Tom-RX1 said:
the rx1 engine may not be running hot enofe . Too cool and a high preformace engine builds carbon in the rings . Most moderen engines run above 195* ones with temp gages have said they run around 160-170* this will cause carbon buildup . put a 165* thermostat in a new car or truck engine and see how fast it starts useing oil .

I think you are on to something there!

I hear you Dave. My wife is an Attorney, I would not want to go that route. I need to know who if anyone is responsible and why?

I feel 1qt in 1,000 miles is fine! So if you ride 2,500 a year that is 2.5 Qt that is no big deal. If you can get the sled to stay at 1Qt every 1,000 miles with a little ring free every now and then that is fine with me! I dont want some kid putting rings in my motor!

Nah, it's not the oil. I still run theYamalube 05/30 and my sled is not one of those with the high oil consumption problems,YET !! 5800 miles.

Bought my sled used with 900 miles on it, the previous owner did an oil change at 500 miles to a full synthetic. I changed it out at about 1600 miles and went to Yamalube because it was about 1/3 quart low, so I thought I should try a different oil. Do the math, it still burns about 1/3 per 1000 miles with Yamalube 5/30.

This sled started burning oil @ 3,000 miles. 80% of our riding is in Quebec. By the 7,000 mile mark, I was using 1 quart every 300 miles. By the time I was @ 9,500 miles, I was using 1 quart of oil every 250 miles and my gas milage was less then 10 miles per gallon. The HP was also lacking and 2005 Vector was taking me.

My dealer was willing to go the extra mile and put new rings. He said 1st Yamaha Motors wants you to run 3 bottles of 12 FL OZ of Yamaha Ring Free for the next 18 gallons of gas. 1 bootle every 6 gallons. After this treatment change oil/filter and test.

During the treatment you could start seeing the HP gains. You can smell the treatment. You do not want a sled parked behind while your sled is running unless you have a rag to wipe your friends sled.

Results: After 3 bottles of full treatment, I changed the oil/filter and put on 325 miles and my oil as not droped at oil. I also got 14.7 miles per gallon. The 03 RX-1 is now 12 miles per hour faster then Vector. This stuff works. When I ride in Quebec I will use 1 OZ/ 10 gallon for the constant treatment.

I would now switch to full synthetic Amsoil 0w-40 4 stroke oil.

Well no we bought these machines so we dont have to add oil or at least thats what I thought.

Who every told you a fourstoke does not use any oil? 5.0,Ls1,Ls2,4.6, on and on they all use oil not a new thing to me. For a motor to be at 8,000-10,500 rpm all day it will use some. Put ant street bike in frist gear and ride for 1,000 miles at 8000-10,500 and i know it will use some oil.
Now 1 qt every 300-500 miles is where i draw the line.

Davey, can you give me more information regarding synthetic oil vs. dino oil. My problems started soon after I switched to a full synthetic oil. This is the first I have heard of this. If this was true, Yamaha did not ask me what oil I was running. I hope this is not the case about what oil I used.
