What relay is it that freezes up on these and where is it located if someone could please... I left my sled outside for the first time since I got it, overnight and trailered it up to go icefishing in the morning. Temp was around 10 degrees F outside. I turned the key and just got a loud CLICK. Turned the key on and off a couple times and sled started and ran fine all day. I believe this is the common relay problem that I have read about, but now I can't find the threads I was looking at and Im currently on dial up so searching takes forever and Im not getting what I want...
Im planning a trip next weekend and the sled will be parked outside our cabin all weekend so I need to make sure I can find this relay and warm it up if needed while on my trip... Thanks guys!!!

Relay most talked about freezing up is the fuel pump relay, not the starter relay. When it is froze, the engine will turn over but not start due to lack of fuel and you can not hear the pump build pressure when the key is turned on. Starter relay is under the hood to the right of the battery. Fuel pump relay is above left foot well, but arrangement of the 4 relays there is not consistent on all sleds.

DItto, sounds like the starter relay. It is under the airbox secured to left side of battery tray (if looking from front of sled). It has 2 10awg battery cables (attached with 8mm nuts) and a harness plugged into it. Think it is about $40-50 to replace. Better to replace it now...even IF you do get the sled started and it seems to start working again. Better to do it now then to get staranded out on the trails somewhere.

If turning over and no fire it is the fuel pump relay... if turn the key and nothing it is the starter relay.

If it clicks, I would say it,s the starter solenoid. The relay has done its job to get power to it, that,s why you hear the click.. The contacts get burnt on the starter solenoid so after many, many starts, they burn themselves off to a point were they no longer make contact, therefore not allowing the 12 volts to get to the starter. That is also the reason, that if you try to start it several times, it may eventually make enough contact to get voltage to the starter. I would change that part before straying very far from home. I,ve seen this problem in vehicles, many times. Worst case, you will have to short out the solenoid, with the key in the run position,to get it started.

where abouts is the solenoid? Ive had my machine taken right down to the engine and tunnel and failed to notice that. Where abouts.

Mine is not the fuel pump relay, I could hear the fuel pump kick on when I turned the key. Then when I tried to start it, I heard just a click, it was kinda loud and it definately sounded like it was coming from the middle of the sled (under the airbox sounds right). I have heard alot of people talk about the fuel pump relay before but mine was working ok at this time anyway...

How about a dead battery?? Might have enough power to turn the fuel pump on but not enough to crank over the engine...

stater relay. had same problem. they say they can get moisture then occasionally fail at low temp ? i replaced mine & all is good. if you hear fuel pump click.... it is not the fuel relay then.

Seems to be some confusion on what the part is called. It is the starter solenoid, not the starter relay. If you remove the air box, trace the red power lead back from the + post on the battery, and that will be attached to one side of the starter solenoid. Remove all the wires going to that solenoid, and take it to your yamaha dealer, and get a replacement. That will fix your problem.
