I am looking for a turbo kit for my 03 RX-1, and I have been talking to jtssrx on this forum about his kit. It seems like a good deal, but I have a few questions about. It uses a different system than most, it removes the 4 rack carbs and replaces them with one before the turbo. It is a system that has been used on dune buggies for several years, so it isn't a new idea.
The things I like about it are:
1-the price
2-the fact that it looses 35# from the sled
3-jtssrx seems to be very helpful and quick to answer my many questions
4-You can use a regular boss seat-no rear exhaust
My reservations:
1-it's a new, never been sold product (4 prototypes tested this past yr)
2-no intercooler
3-it isn't a ball bearing turbo
Thanks for your help, and thanks jtssrx for all the help so-far
By the way, I am looking for somewhere in the 180-200 HP range on pumpgas that I don't have to be constantly messing with.
Will this unit make me happy?

i like the idea of the carbs being gone
i like the 35lbs
i too like the price,
what i dont like is the no muffler thing
as far as it not being a ball bearing turbo is a non issue on this machine.
if there is no intercooler, then there is less need to worry about lag time.
the closer the intake is to the turbo the less time it takes the turbo to increase the boost in this area.
a ball bearing turbo will last longer and is more efficient than a standard thrust bearing turbo but is also about 750-1000$ more.
the reason bender uses a ball bearing turbo (i think)is that they use so much pipe between the turbo on the intake and exhaust side. a standard turbo would need extra time to spool up excentuating the problem of lag.
the others i believe use the ball bearing turbo as a selling point and also to keep lag down when using an intercooler. remember an intercooler is airmass that needs to be compressed to boost preasure. they do make the air cooler thus keep temps down and also add power buy putting more air in the air.
i think that they are both good setups, just two different ways to go.
if there were a muffler version of freds it would sound better to me. (correct me here if he has hidden a muffler somewhere)
i love that they get rid of the multiple carbs. jetting one carb is way easier and when you are talking about a boosted system the need for a strong vaccum pulse on a small bore carb becomes less of an issue.
i would think if you are going to trail ride the sled you would want a cpr or other that uses the factory exhaust,

Thanks for the reply, I am very interested in the system, I just want to make sure it is a good option.
For me, the biggest thing that draws me to this one is the weight loss, It is almost too good to be true, gain power and lose weight.
I asked about the exhaust, they said it was quieter than a piped 2 stroke, I think that would be fine with me, I don't trail ride to any extent.
Thanks

THE RAY-JAY TURBO WAS CHOSEN ON ITS ALILITY TO PERFORM, NOT PRICE. BY PERFORMING, I MEAN THAT THE RX-1 RUNS VERY LOW IDLE OIL PRESSURE WHICH POTENTIALLY CAN BE BAD FOR TURBO BEARINGS. THE RAY-JAY CAN AND DOES DEAL WITH THIS ISSUE. ALSO, BEING A DRAW THRU SYSTEM THE TURBO SEALS MUST BE ABLE TO DEAL WITH FUEL, WHICH THE RAY-JAY DOES WELL. IN ADDITION THIS PARTICULAR TURBO STYLE HAS BEEN CERTIFIED FOR USE ON AIRCRAFT. FOR THESE REASONS AND THAT I HAVE BEEN USING THEM FOR 20 PLUS YEARS ON SAND RAILS IS WHY WE CHOSE THIS TURBO. MR, TURBO ALSO USES THIS TURBO ON THEIR 500HP STREET BIKES AND SALT FLAT RACERS, ALL WITHOUT INTERCOOLERS. VISIT THEIR WEB SITE.,. MR.TURBO.COM HOPE ALL THIS HELPS FRED

IN ADDITION---- NOISE IS ALWAYS AN ISSUE THESE DAYS. WE DO HAVE A CUSTOMER WHO INSTALLED A SUPER TRAP ON OUR KIT WHICH MELLOWED OUT THE EXHAUST. IF YOU VISIT OUR WEB SITE AND WATCH US RACING OTHER HIGH PERFORMANCE SLEDS YOU CAN FORM YOUR OWN CONCLUSION AS TO THE NOISE ISSUE. THE PHAT-MAN VIDEO OF LP VS BENDER, YOU CAN NOT HEAR OUR SLED RUNNING NEXT TO THE BENDER, UNDER BOOST. AGAIN, I HOPE THIS HELPS, THANKS, FRED

I looked into turbos quite a bit too, but was told not to even think about running a non intercooled turbo. The biggest issue for me in the intercooler, then the bearings. I always research the living s
t out of anything I buy, and I will likely resaerch for another year before I buy a turbo.
Of course, another argument is that I am cheap.

I don't want to get into this again but. Who told you you had to have an intercooler? What was thier reason? Our intake temps are very low.

No argument here!!!!

The LP kit does shed weight but it puts the exhaust manifold, turbo, and muffler (you might add one) in the front of the sled where the last thing you need is extra weight. I am assuming you're a mountain rider. The rear mount kits replace the OEM muffler. Take out 21lb. muffler, put in 21lb. turbo package. The charge tube and intercooler provide an amazing temp. drop, typically over 70 degrees F. Much better for the engine! The rear mount kits also keep much of the heat out of the engine compartment. That is important when you're riding in the mountains because there are many times where ground speed is very low and track speed is high. You don't get the same cooling effect as driving down the trail. Keeping things cool up front is important, remember the belt and clutches are up there too. If you want some good reading pick up Corky Bell's book on turbocharging. It will explain things better than I can. Also remember, you'll want more power in the future, so make sure the system you choose can give that to you . If you have any questions feel free to PM me. RX FUN

Very good input RX Fun. I would have to agree.

front end weight
I understand the front end weight issue, but if my math is correct, if I take out a 21 lb exhaust mainly from the rear, to lose 35# I must be removing 14 lbs from the front, also.
Maybe this isn't right, but it seems like it would be.
The Lightning Pro is capable of much more than 200 Horsepower, I just don't feel that I need it right now, and I don't want to go in the engine.

LOL, Once you experience over 200 you will be hooked. Trust me I said the same thing.

HP!!!!!
I knew I was going to take some crap for that comment, I am only basing it on my experiences riding my sled at home elev 900', and out west at elevation. My 800 1M feels like a rocket at home, and it feels like a 440 out west. I can't imagine even having the 150 HP in the hills, let alone 200.
I know what you mean about the HP, It is amazing what a person can get used to.

You lose more than 21lbs. out of the rear with the LP. You get rid of the 4 into 2 exhaust pipe also. You will want more power. Almost everyone does. It is worse (or better!!) than drugs, very addictive but satisfying. To add a note to the weight issue, with this much power weight is not a huge concern but when you start throwing more (weight) up front its a step in the wrong direction. Just ride a Vector Mtn and you'll see what I mean. RX FUN

ALL GOOD POINTS----HOWEVER, THE TURBO PACKAGE WEIGHS ABOUT THE SAME AS THE STOCK PARTS REMOVED. IE CARBS, AIRCLEANER, AND BRACKETS. AND WHILE IT IS TRUE THAT BY REMOVING THE MUFFLER YOU SHIFT THE WEIGHT BIAS FORWARD, YOU NOW HAVE THE ADVANTAGE OF HAVING A REAL TRUNK, AND CAN ALSO INSTALL THE BATTERY IN THE REAR WHICH MOVES THE BIAS REARWARD. IN ADDITION THERE IS NO SNOW INJESTION ISSUE AND THE EXHAUST IS NOT SUBJECTED TO COLD/HOT SHOCK WHICH CAUSES CRACKING OF THE PIPES. KEEP IN MIND THE L.P TURBO KIT SAVES 35# OVER STOCK AND ABOUT 60# OVER OTHER TURBO KITS.
THE NICE THING IS EVERYONE NOW HAS CHOICES ON WHICH WAY THEY PREFER TO GO, AND WE CAN CONCENTRATE ON MORE IMPORTANT ISSUES, LIKE HAVING THE RX-1 BE KING OF EVERYWHERE!!!
