I was in town today so I stopped by a battery shop and quizzed the gentleman working there about lightweight batteries for the RX-1. He seem quite knowledgable about his batteries. I explained to him I wanted to buy a Power Sonic PS-1270 for starting my sled and the guy about tipped over dead!
He said the 1270 was never designed as a starting battery. It was designed for a life of low draw nearly continuous service. He used the emergency exit signs above doors as an example. He said the cold cranking amps of this battery are so minimal if any............ Then he disappeared and came back with a tester and proceeded to test this battery for cold cranking amp capacity right before my eyes. The tester had a minimum of 200 on it's scale and a fully charger 1270 couldn't get to 200.
He again told me I was barking up the wrong tree and the early bird gets the worm and don't fish in the company pond and all that.
I promised him I'd get the specifics of the battery I'm replacing and he said he would recommend a battery for me. He mentioned the brand name "Cyclone" as an opion. Yikes! talk about the third degree. Most shmucks would just sell you a battery and be done with it but not this guy.
Is he on to something or should I just order the battery mail order? I understand there is a price to be paid for going light but I also want to make reasonably sure I'm not leaving my sled in the woods overnight. He also said the Power sonic battery would not be a good battery to keep on a battery tender??? Huh? Help me out again. Man, am I ever full of questions tonight! Powder Blue

I've noticed a number of postings by people using the power sonic battery and they seem to work fine. I forked out big bucks early last season for the Mountain Performance battery that saves 10lbs and I have been happy with it. Only once did I almost draw it down and that was when I ran my sled out of gas. Now I carry a nose syringe in my tool kit that I stick on the fuel pump vacuum hose so I can prime the carbs without cranking the engine forever (if I run out of gas). I researched different "cheaper" batteries before buying and couldn't find one with equivalent cold cranking amps.

Is yours the white one that says BATCAP on it? I was just looking at old posts and I saw that one listed. Good idea on repriming after running out of fuel. I know I've been cups away. Thanks for the info. Powder Blue

It's all white, but I don't recall any writing on it. It was $229 from mountain performance

Its kinda like this ,,,, HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT TO SPEND??

I bought the $20 battery and it works fine, cranks the sled just as fast as the old battery ,,,,,, Just cant do it for a long time !!

Sure you can spend 200-300 dollars on a battery that might perform only slightly better at best and if i recall correctly the mountain performance battery has similar or less Cranking hours than the cheap $20 battery

If you are the type that can make the $20 battery work (becuase of the push on speaker type connectors) then open up your wallet and buy the $300 battery!! plus you can afford to replace the cheap battery 10 times compared to the $200 battery!!

Hope this helps

I have also heard if you buy a replacement battery for a R1 bike it is 5lbs lighter than the stock RX battery

I am thinking of going with a Yuassa YT12ABS battery.
It is 6.3 lbs. down from the 11.2 stocker.
It has 175 cold cranking amps compared to the 270 for the stocker.
It measures exactly the same size as the opening below the tool box. 6" long x 3 7/16" wide x 4 3/16 high. I will have trim very little to make it fit. The nice thing about it is it's the same physical size as the YTX9BS and packs another 45 CCA of power. It only weighs .9 lbs. more than the weaker group 9 battery. I think it's worth it for the added insurance.

Now my problem is if I put this battery in is where to mount the CDI box if I retain the stock airbox? Powder Blue

Hey did you ever get that battery installed frostbite? Maxdlx
