Howdy guys,

While I'm not a sled rider, I've been a sled engine user for many years now. I play in the dirt and desert and prefer a CVT setup over having to tickle the gears. One less thing to worry about...

I've had an 800 twin, 1000 triple, Apex (actually it was an RX1 with R1 fuel injection adapted) and Phazer engines in my rides and now am planning a new venture.

The three cars on the left are all Phazer powered (and now all gone) The larger one on the right uses a Chevy Ecotec with a CVT setup.

You can find more of my stuff at Yellow Dog Racing if you're curious.

The latest will be an off road assault vehicle with about a 93" wheel base, around 75" wide, somewhere in the neighborhood of 18-20" of travel on each corner, wrapped in a fiberglass body that looks just like a Ford Raptor Trophy Truck. I'll be building it from the ground up - full tube frame, lots of my own custom CNC parts, my own design and build.

Think Polaris 900 XP RZR on steroids... (the body was actually designed to fit on the 900 XP)

What I'm interested in is some opinion on engines and I'm thinking the Nytro will be the ticket, but I want to make sure. If not, I'll go with the tried and true Apex powerplant.

It's my understanding that the Nytro has a torque curve that's just amazing (even compared to the Apex). Starts low, pulls like a freight train and doesn't sign off.

True? This is exactly what I've been looking for in the dirt.

How's the reliability proven to be? The old Apex head design's been around since the mid 80's and it has to be one of the most durable and reliable engines to be found anywhere. I'd assume that Yamaha's put that same quality and design into the Nytro - just losing a couple valves in the process...

How much lighter is the Nytro than the Apex? I know it's one cylinder down and that Yamaha got rid of the gear driven output shaft, so there's less rotating stuff and mass. Does it sit lower in overall height in comparison to the output shaft? Shorter, smaller engine overall?

Is vibration an issue? Apex is a smooth running powerplant...

What's the throttle response like compared to an Apex or Phazer? The Phazer engines I've run almost seem like they know you're gonna hit the throttle before you do - amazingly quick, as was my Apex.

And now for the big question - how is a Supercharged Nytro in comparison to a Supercharged Apex?

I'm going to be using Mountain Performance as my supplier for a supercharger and I see that both the Nytro and Apex are making very similar hp, but I've not been able to find torque specs. Anyone have any to share? And just for the record, I'm not really interested in a turbo system incase someone perks up and says "turbo it instead". I have my reasons, thank you. (:

Any thoughts and information will be greatly appreciated. I won't be starting this build for close to a year and right now I'm just in the process of starting my homework. Powerplant's an integral aspect and where I'd like to start.

I'll be discussing clutching as this gets along too - thinking Micro-Belmont and Team Tied, but also VERY open to suggestions other than A/C driven - I've knocked more towers off of those darned things than I can count...

I'll be glad to share the build on this site, when it starts, if interested - I realize this is a sled site. Let me know.

Thanks in advance for anything anyone will share with me.
