All my skid wheel bearings are toast but they're replaceable. Is it best just to go through a dealer or does someone know of a good bearing supplier who sells for less elsewhere?

In canuckville i order bulk packs of bearings from royal distributing... 6004(for rear axle) and 6205 (for aftermarket) idles for $33 bucks for 10 bearings... they are NTN std. black seal with low temp grease.

they dont carry 6005 bearings that i need for both the apex and phazer RTX but i usually pic them up at my local auto parts store for about $4 per bearing. same bearing.

x 2 on the bulk packs i get them from Royal D. but even with bran new bearings i pop the seal and check the amount of grease. usually have to put some in.

cheers

I see that you live in the US try and get the NTN blue seal bearings they are the best, you can go to any auto parts store or bearing place. if you want you can order on line from Hi-performance Engineering

I use skf on my sled. I work in an autoparts store so I know what's popular. The cheap ones don't last as long as the namebrand ones do but if you way them pop out the seal and put good grease in it. I find they seam to last longer cause from the factory usually use a small amount in them.

If u use the NTN blue seal (appox $10 ea.) They have low temp lithium base grease which does not wash out. They last much longer. If u use the cheaper bearing u should pop the seal out and change the grease to either good quality wheel bearing or marine grease which is lithium base (wax base). U should also use this type of grease in u'r jack shaft and track drive shaft bearings. U will notice that when u use this grease and water gets in the bearing, they do not rust.

For what ever reason, the bearings that come in the Yamaha accessory spoke wheels ( I think they are stock now) seemed to have the best bearing life. I had 6,000 plus miles on my wheels and bearings. I believe they were an orange color, and NTN. I'm thinking the orange was some type on cold weather material, as it didn't seem to blow out the seal lips like the std. black seals do.

The NTN blue seal is a cold weather seal. Maybe Yamaha had them make an orange one 4 them.

Glad you have had good luck with them. Personally I don't find them any better than most other bearings I have purchased.

I tried them one year and was totally surprised at the end of the season how rough some of them were.

I purchased the Yamaha spoked wheels last year and was surprised how well they held up (only 1500 K though) over the winter, I have spun all of them and they are still really smooth.
I will let you know what bearing is in them when I re-grease (just for peace of mind)
