Loose-fitting Hood (shroud)

Noticed on my Apex that the front end of the shroud (I'd say hood, but Yamaha calls it a shroud) that it doesn't fit snug-actually can be moved up and down easily, about 1/4 to 1/2"-wouldn't be good for the longevity of the piece.

Stopped by the dealer who had a variety of "sold" Apex & Attacks awaiting delivery and they were the same way. Nobody at the shop seemed concerned when I questioned it.

Anyone else notice it? I looked at the "hook" molded on the underside of the shroud and there is one strip of foam rubber, looks like I'll need to experiment with something similar to tighten the fit.

Mine is the same way, i noticed this last week. My steering has lots of play too, front to back not just the side to side.

I used silver duct tape on the cross tube that holds the hood. Mine took 3 layers and now the hood is snug on the tube. Did anyone notice that the tail light assembly is a little loose fitting? If you tap on the assembly it rattles. I used a small piece of tape on the upper tab on the assembly to snug it up.

I noticed the tail light being loose also. Without a doubt this sled is not up to par with the RX-1 as far as fit and finish. The front bumper and hood alignment is very bad. With computer design I still can't figure out how they blew that one so bad. :?

Duct tape

Guess the duct tape would work, but for the price of admission, we shouldn't need to be making these types of "tweaks".

Uh oh!

Isn't this how the Fusion started?

I sure hope not.

I was just at the dealer today and looked at two of the APEX ER's on the floor that were race ready. I see what people mean about the taillight but it seems very minor. I did not see the loose fitting shroud issue at all and both units handlebars are rock solid side to side and forward/back. I have never seen a snowmobile to date that didn't have some form of hood rattle or slight mis alignment etc. though I have not seen many Yamahas in the past. To me it seems to have better fit and finish than all of my Polaris's and I have no real complaints with any of them (except my daughters 340 but that is a 3500 dollar sled brand new). I think I will be buying an ER in the next week or so and will file my report then but from my time at the dealer, evverything looks pretty damn good.

The stearing post play is easy to fix. just remove the top outer 1/2 nylon stearing bearing block. Mill or sand off the exact amount of play. next turn down the bearing spacers the exact amount off the play. put it together and you will have a perfect no slop fit . Took me less than 1 hour. mine wasn't real bad but I wanted a perfect fit. Alot of people will never notice it. The hood seems fine on mine but saw one at a dealer that must have been 1" off center. I am thinking that maybe the airbox has something to do with it as it somwhat aligns the hood I am not certian of this but you may want to check to make certian the airbox is properly fitted to the intake bodies mine was less than 1/4 off no big deal but over 1" is pretty noticable. may be a dealer set up issue.

The tape works!

I used SX7001's idea and wrapped some duct "racer" tape around the bar and it did the trick. Shroud fits like it should have in the first place.

The shroud has to be a little loose,if it fits to tight you might have more of a problem to get the 1/4 turn screws into place easy, and when you add the nose bag it makes it that much harder to get the nose of the cover under the pipe and the button screws into place, imo i am glad that yammi did not make it to tight and hard to do trailside at -30 degrees, and the tailight has to move some for all the pounding it is going to take, heck if it was mounted solid you would vibrate your bulb to death, trust me i know what vuibration does,i had a confusion last year lol ;)! :flag:

No trouble with fasteners

"if it fits to tight you might have more of a problem to get the 1/4 turn screws into place easy"

I had no trouble fastening the dzus fasteners of the shroud with modifying the bar with the tape to hook the shroud & hold it secure.
