Riverside County, CA has put a ban on riding dirt bikes and ATV’s due to the noise they create. This ban applies to all land in the county including your own personal residence. Its been said that it was the loud after market pipes on the bikes that started to cause a problem. This makes me worry that someday there could be a band on sleds in my area. We have about a 100 miles of groomed trails, many of which pass near subdivisions of newer high priced homes. Most of the people in these homes do not ride and would not care if any of us rode.
I hate loud sleds. I have a 4-stroke, which of course is quiet and I plan on keeping it that way. Just about all newer 2-stroke sleds are also quite running if left with the stock exhaust. My house is at least one mile from the nearest trail, however, I can here a piped sled go for miles down the trail. I wish the after market companies would stop selling pipes or cans that are louder than stock. Its going to make it harder and harder to keep the trails open. There have already been trails in the US and Canada that have been shut-down because of noise.

I just went through this on another sledding site. While I admit I push things a bit far to get people really twisted up basicly what happened was someone mentioned that they were riding with another board member in the Kewenaw and "They could hear his sled coming for miles" I simply posted that people that have loud pipes are a-holes and got a real pissing match going.
Just the other day there was a post that The paper company that owns most of the timber rights in the UP is selling and conservation groups are buying into the land. Bye Bye loud pipes and maybe bye bye sleds in the UP if they don't clean up their acts. The guys with loud pipes are now second guessing their equipment.
In New York it is in fact illegal to modify a snowmobile exhaust in such a matter as to produce more noise than stock. It is also illegal to sell a snowmobile that has a modified exhaust.

It's also illegal to modify or alter your exhaust in any way in Wisconsin also even if it's quiter than stock you still cant modify it.
Did anyone ever hear back from that idiot who wrote that article in a magazine not painting a good picture for us sledders. Found it.
This dude here and his kind are enemy number one for sledders.

The guy that wrote that article misinformed many readers. Reading that article puts me in a bad mood. It pisses me off that someone can judge all snowmobiliers because he had a bad experience with a couple.
