Guys, I hear you. I LOVE that APEX motor but after riding with Vipes and Winders I started to HATE the chassis on the Apex. I'm 6'3" and weigh about 265lbs. The Apex just doesn't "fit" me. I traded my Apex and son's Phazer in last week and just bought a 2016 Viper LTX-DX which I will finish the season riding and then hand over to my 15 year old son. The dilemma I am facing is to go Sidewinder or another Viper or another APEX (still haven't ridden newer than 2008 Apex). Either way I want a 50th anniversary something for myself.
I will say this....my buddies 2017 Sidewinder LTX-SE with QS3's is probably the fastest, smoothest, quietest sled I have ever ridden. The ONLY thing I don't like is the range. We ride Quebec and Ontario big trails where some stretches go 120 miles+. Sidewinder can't do it. Need to think about gas everytime. Spare tank on back is only option.
I'm 6'4" and the Apex fits just fits me fine, the Cat chassis pushes me further forward then I like. The Doo XP chassis fit me well and seemed to not bump me forward. Every time they raise the seat higher they also push the rider further forward. Knees bent backward under hips just brings excruciating pain. Not Cool! Why can't we ride a sled like we ride a bike cruiser style?
2011 Apex has less range with a bit smaller tank. I can do 120 miles with maybe 130 to empty possible. If you have never ridden a 2011 up you should try one big step up from the 2010 back. If you can ride the Cat Chassis, like it and it doesn't kill your knees maybe the SW is your sled. The Apex is a different breed of sled a sport cruiser that many enjoy and many point out all its faults. Most of those faults are what makes the Apex loved. Its rider forward enough for cruising, the motor makes sweet music not drone, it has the perfect engine with more then enough power and its not to heavy to ride (carry maybe)! I would buy another one! Maybe a 2017 or 18 if they still make them. Maybe a Cat chassis with an Apex engine and mod the seat so it does not crowd me into the cowl!

I haven't rode the SW etc but I can tell they would be too forward for me as well... love my 07 Attack but wish I would move into a 2011 or newer Apex with EPS.. can't do it ..being 68 yrs old I'm winding down.. money wise.. plus I have the wife.. I mean I couldn't leave here without EPS .. so I'd have to upgrade her's as well.

I have to agree...I love the apex, even though mine is a pre ....all the improvements have made it exceptional, the latest slim jims on curve skis...it's near perfect for me....and that motor!!! Smiles when she fires up, everytime!I'm 6'4" and the Apex fits just fits me fine, the Cat chassis pushes me further forward then I like. I'd like to believe the Apex will continue on... It can't be a strain on Yamaha to spit out just a few every year. Keep it up Yammy! One more year until I can get my new Apex!

This whole tread is the whole truth about the nature of the sport of snowmobiling. We buy into all the hype and marketing to try the latest machine. Just did 400 miles in three days traded back and forth on 4 sleds. My Viper a skidoo XP, 800 RR cat and a mpi apex.
To be honest the Apex and the ski doo were both easy to ride. The apex is just an awesome handling machine in the western Up.
Hype up the new metal all you want , but if your happy don't jump and expect to be blown away. Yamaha builds the apex still cause it flat out works period.

If you took an Apex, the skidoo 850, a Polaris 800, and any arctic cat, and put them up on the stage with all the bodywork removed.... fill the room with technical savvy people.... none of which know anything about snowmobiles... because we don't want any brand biased people present.... take all the body work off the four machines..... and ask everybody which machine cost $12,000.... based solely on the four naked machines sitting there... ask everybody which one cost $12,000... they would all choose the apex

15,000 plus clickometers on mine. Still smiling!!!
Close to 800 miles in 4 1/2 days and my 53 year old body felt just fine.
Fill gas, turn key and go. It does it with precision.

Yeah I love my 16 Apex as some of you probably have seen I'm just not nuts about the rear suspension but I think that's fixable

I want the new 2018 with reduced ski lift... damn...and I don't play the lottery... sisters took all the family money ... oh well... life is tough.
I have an 04 warrior with a vector mountain seat (stiffer foam), rox adjustable riser,06 RS nytro front end wider than stock Rx front and a platinum spec m-20 airwave, 6.9 pilot ski's and lastly the gytr shocks off of my attack with Hygear twisted springs and hi low compression adjuster. If this sled was fuel injected it would be perfect. I also have an 07 attack GT with WRP seat 2" rox pivoting riser on top of stock riser, Hygear dual rate spring with revalve on mono and axis front shocks high and low compression adjustable and twisted springs. I love these sleds. Yamaha made a big mistake building these sleds. Everyone says they are to heavy well I weigh 255 and I don't mind the weight on me or the sleds.
