My buddy has a 2011 Apex with 900 miles. The sled would only tach 9400 when he got it now it will only tach 9800 no matter bhow long you hold it open. My 2012 would only tach 9800 new but @500miles I started to see10,200 and higher on big runs. I can't believe this motor is taking this long to break in---any similar results??

I would try a different belt to see if that makes a difference. Maybe borrow one from a buddy just to see if that is the problem.

Give it some more time, it will start to loosen up more each time he rides it.

I might pop my primary on his sled and see what happens.

Check your EXUP valve adjustment, it don't take much to make a difference. I was seeing 10,200 before 500 mi. If you break in by the book or easy it will take longer to reach normal operating RPM as well.

There were some instructions in here maybe you could do a search. If I remember right you take the seat off and there is a cover you remove to access the valve. There is a hole to insert a drill bit. I think you just turn the key on so it goes to home position then you put the drill bit in the hole and it should align up with the hole in the pulley that the cables wrap around. Adjust the cables if needed to align. There is an adjuster on each cable, you need to maintain some tension on the cable's.STAIN said:How is that done?
There is a procedure to check function but not necessary to adjust. I turned the valve with the key off then turned the key on and it should return home and check again. You can also check it with the motor running by bliping the throttle to see that it operates.

I have just short of 1,400 mi on and run 10,600 to 10,800 depending on condition's. Good hard pac will always pull more RPM.
