Since this kinda covers both stock and aftermarket skids I thought I'd post it here.

What is everyone opinion, should I try and work with the stock rear skid or upgrade to an M-10? The sled is an '03 with a 159 finger and soon to be turbo'd.

I can get a good deal on a used 121" M-10, of course I'll have to buy some new rails to make it work. Have to price them out and see.

Just how good or bad do the stock skids really work? Is it worth spending the loot to try and make it better?

I like to ride fairly aggressive on the trails, usually spend a week in Yellowstone every year and am getting old and fat, well fat anyway :(

What would you do if you had the choice?

Put your sled next to your buddies......now, get down on the ground and look at how steep your angle of attack is compared to his. Notice that it is like 10' steeper!!!! That is a hole diggin mamba jamba. Depends what your good deal is on the M10 but if you check the posts you will find that it will cost you about $400 to through a AC skid on there. With the 159" I am sure you could run a 153" like I did or get a 151" off a king kat. Easy bolt up, just need to make some rear brackets which was easy and cost me $60. The only downside is they say the AC skids aren't as good as Poo's for the bumps but great in the powder. Check the post below and check out the pix.

M10 is a bad choice for deep snow applications. Problem with too steep an approach angle and poor weight transfer. Also, you're sure to need more than just rails to change a 121 to a 159. If you want a deep snow suspension, you might consider an ExpertX or one of the light weight "clones" like Ekholm or Mountain Addiction.

Can anything be done to improve the approach angle on the Proaction? Like moving mounting points or changing rails? Or is changing skids the only option?

You could get a drop and roll template & relocate the chaincase , and move the rear skid in relation , but that's a LOT of work . Here's a picture of one I'm doing right now , you can see how much lower the secondary clutch is .

You could always try to locate a '05 Yammy suspension someone took out. It seems to offer the best of both worlds, ride and deep snow performance.

Dont bother with the m10. It is made for trails not the powder. Try to find an 151" or 153" AC skid, You can remove your transfer rods, but that won't fix aproach angle. If you want make your stock rails work, look into the Holz rear skid.

keep in mind that you might be able to sell your stock skid to someone on snowest for a couple of hundred which would almost pay for your AC skid.

PM Lincoln on here. He has a mod that makes the '03-'04 RX-1 mtn suspension work. I believe it does the same as a drop & roll (moving the drive axle and rails closer together)only backwards. He had a thread on here where he drilled holes up higher to drop the rear of the sled down. Or you could try my mod (see picture) but, it's not tested other than on the city streets here at the house.
