I know this is bordering on a Nazi state, but knowing the dangers of blind corners on the trails, doesn't it make sense?

Is it not mandatory in your state?

Can't say for sure. I think it's only this year that auto insurance became "law."
I know I got it because of MY sled (wanted collision insurance). Since getting house payments and a family, now I'm thinking more from the "am I protected?" perspective (and I just renewed the policies).

i think it is if you buy new. at least i did last year. couldn't leave the dealer lot without ins. registered.
if i were to get an old sled i wouldn't get insurance because it wouldn't be worth it. (too much $ to repair if wrecked). but it is good to have liability just too cover you azz not getting sued.

Well that's the point. If you drive a modest sled, it doesn't pay to add collision.xt_gt said:but it is good to have liability just too cover you azz not getting sued.
It's just that this is a sport with some serious downside. Like a part could break on that railbed you're doing 60 on, so having some financial protection just seems too obvious.

Liability Insurance is a must and should be mandated. Also with uninsured provisions to protect everything else you own.

I got it, its STUPID and irresponsible to ride without it!
God forbid someone gets hurt you are not liable financially.

Insurance should be a requirement on any motorized vehicle that can cause damage to someone else or there property. AFAIK its not required in Minnesota YET but I have it AND full coverage for all of those that don't

Trail PASS & INSURANCE should be renewed when you plate your sled yearly! Who is going to buy a sled of descent value and not drive it on trails or public property...we have way to many WAHOO'S driving around with either...and on the long run we end up paying for these people! my.02

I'm not going to argue whether you it should be mandatory or not. I'm just going to ask that if anyone wishes to pursue the issue of making it mandatory keep it at a local level.
Just because it would be best where you're at doesn't mean it's what's best for everyone else.
If anyone wishes to argue otherwise I will simply invite you to come up here for a visit/ride. It will say much more than I ever could.

not mandantory here but a rip off!!! in Mass it can run you $6-700 go over the line into NH and it's less than half??? BUT even though i ride up there or in Maine i can't buy it there cause i'm from Mass we pay through the nose for everything.
Quebec has it down you buy your pass you automatically have insurance WAY cheaper then here. Can't understand why we can't do it that way.

huh, thats interesting. Quebec is MUCH more controlled safety wise( compared to Ontario at least), maby the provence has a contract with an insurance company lower priced accompanied with rules that are more strict and enforced. They have cops with radar guns and everyhig at all times on the trails.srvfan said:not mandantory here but a rip off!!! in Mass it can run you $6-700 go over the line into NH and it's less than half??? make sure the amount that you are covered.there is quite a bit of difference I pay quite a bit $460.00 a year, for full coverage!no question ask. .....I bought a sled that cost me $14000.00, how much does it cost to get your sled or your medical needs. A yahoo! hit me, in quebec this is just a example I am not single out anybody! he hits me and I am disable an He walk away. He's insurance only cover him in quebec, not me! You can't sue him! where ever you ride accidents happen, as long as you are aware of that! than carry-on ride, but I have a hard time paying for a accident that I did not cause ! my .02

Mandatory insurance will knock a lot of sleds off the trail = less money to keep the trails open. A family that has a couple of 1991 Phazers is not going to pay for insurance when they hit the trail once or twice a season. Especially if they have to insure a sled for their 12 year old son for major bucks. One less new kid that could have gotten introduced to snowmobiling. I say the government should stay the hell out of it and if an individual is scared of uninsured sleds they should get full coverage for themselves.
Sled manufacturers would pay the price in new sled sales too. It's already hard enough to afford payments on a new sled. Don't get me wrong, insurance is a great idea if you have the means to afford it, but in an industry already in trouble, why would you want to make it even more expensive.

Say joe blow uninsured rider crosses the center of the trail and wacks me. Say I end up with major injuries. I am now out of sledding, truckin, my house, just to pay for little uninsured boys chance to save a couple hundred on insurance. Ya I have full coverage, and it cost me more because of the uninsured tucker wanna be's out on the trail. So to say it would keep people from ridding can be a two way street. Iowa requires sled insurance, last year was the highest # of sleds ever registered in the state. If you want to do it you will find a way.
