Got my mpi extension today. Looks good but who knows how to mount the rear heat exchanger to it? They said it works with it but the stocker extension has a downward angle to it and the mpi is right inline with the tunnel. Please help me. I need to put sled back together as we're leaving Friday morning for 1ST ride of the year and I'm veryyyyy.............excit......ed. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh. I finished early.

Pice would help, but I believe you are installing a MPI heat exchanger, correct?
If so, their exchanger mounts to the underside of the "top" and you cut both 90* bends off the stock crossover tube and use 1 90 for each side with a section of heater hose and clamps. when finished, the 90's will be pointed in the same direction as the stock crossover tube did.

No grape....took the stock tunnel extension off my 05 MTN which has the factory supplied heat exchanger and am now installing an aftermarket tunnel extension (mpi) and the heat exchanger doesn't look like it'll work with the mpi extension.
Thank you for the reply though!
Just wondering if anyone has done this yet?

If it's anything like hartmans tunnel ext. your need to build you own exchanger out of 3/4 copper pipe.

how big is the gap between the exchanger and the aluminum on the extension?
If it's not too long you might be able to get away with drilling out the holes and using some bolts to mount it instead of the rivets. Make sure you use nylon-locking nuts so they don't vibrate out and use some flat washers so they don't push through.
Another solution would be to get a piece of aluminum and rivet it to the new extension and then cut/bend so that you could rivet the exchanger to it.
Put your Monster Garage hat on - I'm sure you'll find a way to make it work.

The problem is, and how Tom Hartman explained it to me, is that when you bottom out hard(like dropping off of a cornice) your going to rip that stock exchanger right out.

Why?
If you are mounting the heat exchanger in the stock location would it be any different? The only difference the kit makes is that the tunnel extension kicks up some. It does not change the suspension mounts. So in theory if you bottom out hard you would take it out with the stock extension as well???? If you leave the suspension alone and mount the exchanger in the same way as stock, but it has a gap above it you should be fine.
EDIT: Adding pics from MPIs website that show suspension mounts do not change with the extension kit.

Guy you pick up my attention
now i'm running a 16'' track, with a hell of a big heat exchanger, and Bullydog suspension and rear suspension hole 3 inch in front of the stock one.
Last trip something happen, guess what, track hit the hose and
, the collar goes away and lost all my coolant. Thing a have know later on the trips, when heat light came on.
When sled transfert hard, track is hitting the extension, stock one. I have put tonight some protection, but tomorow i will remove them, it gonna kill my track.
Now the question,
is i'm the only one to hit hose and tunnel extension, and what do you think i must do.
thanks

Exactly. It was a bad afterthought by yamaha to mount the exchanger in such a manner. 3/4 tubing it more efficient and has no chance of getting caught by anything.

Ah....there we go I guess together they were too large!
The pic of the left side is not that good but when you look at the sled from the side you cannot see the exchanger. The outside measurements are 2 1/2"h X 11 5/8"w. The material used was 1" X 1/8" flat (top and bottom) and 1" X 1" Tube. Not sure of the wall thickness.

Yep, that is what I was trying to describe. If the track hits it, it would have hit the stock one too. I put over 3,000 miles on my 03 with that heat exchanger on it (extroverts and transfer kit too) and never hit it.
Have fun this weekend.

Just because you haven't hit it doesn't mean it can't/won't happen. If you don't believe me call Tom Hartman and ask him yourself.

I'm not doubting that he told you that, but I did some searching and have not seen one documented case of it happening on this forum or on SnoWest.
This is in contrast the problem with the track hitting the bracket on the Apex. That has gotten lots of coverage on the forums and even attention from Yamaha.
Like I said, I had 3k miles on my RX1 with no problems, we have two vectors with almost 2k miles on each of them, and I ride with other RX1s as well, and have never seen it happen. That doesn't mean it can't happen, I just think the chances are very low based on my experience with these sleds.
Have a great weekend - think snow!

I'm still trying to find the need for a rear exchanger. I have over 2700 miles on my '03 with no overheating problems. The last 200 have been running with 10lbs of boost and the guage still doesn't climb above 170 F running down the trail. It runs even cooler with the Holz Racing Products scratchers dropped.
