Just got a MPI stage one and I am planning on running a av gas and pump mix and just avgas with the bigger pullies. We only have 90 at the pump(alaska Interior) so I wanna be safe. Wondering who else has used av gas and how you liked it. :yam:

According to MPI avgas maybe isn't the best idea:
6. We recommend 100% race gas at/or above 110 octane. Aviation fuel is NOT the same thing as race gas. AV gas is designed to boil at a lower temp ( high altitude, 15,000ft plus) and is primarily used at partial throttle and low RPMs (2500 RPM, ie Airplane motors.) A minimum mixture of 50/50 is acceptable with pump premium and 110 race gas.

Av gas is still a leaded fuel!! If you run a wideband, kiss it goodbye, it doesnt run the same as race gas. Don't do it.
I've had my private pilots license for a long time, I've played with it in all sorts of stuff before I figured out its not the right stuff for every job.
Avgas powered airplanes run on technology developed in the 40's and has never really progressed to anywhere near the technology found in almost anything today.

Stay away from it if possible. Yes it will work, no its not the best for your engine. Its been debated for years one way or the other but i have found a mix of race or straight race to be the cleanest for the engine itself.

WELL DONE GUYS!!! When I first saw this post I hesitated to say anything because I know that there are a million people out there running AV gas (dont make it right) and didnt want to start a huge debate. I wont go into it now as everyone has already covered it. But thanks to all for making sure our mpi customer is set up for success.

I have run it for 3 seasons with 0 problems up to 18 pounds ( I know it is pushing it a little) with just 2 head-gaskets. Lots of opinionated people here.
Av fuel is specifically made for turbo and supercharger applications at high power settings (That is what airplanes do) it is more stable than just about any other fuel. There is lead that will shorten O2 / wide-band sensor live just like almost all race fuels .
Suite yourself but we run it all the time up here I am just next door to you in Northern canada.

Av fuel gets tested for Octane in supercharged knock engines with a 300+degree intake temperature --- it is made for this application.

Made for slow revving engines ??????? Octane controls the speed of ignition and burn of fuel -------- any high octane fuel burns at a more controlled / slower rate than lower octane fuel .
If there is a downside it is just like any real high octane fuel it is harder to start at cold temps --- so will any race fuel and realy not much of a problem.

When I talk to anyone (about 50 calls) a day and answer the same questions the same way. Some people can get race gas and some cant. And like I said about a million people have used av gas even myself at one time or another with good success. If a customer tells me that they cant get race or cant afford it but still want to run higher boost levels I tell them the same thing. We dont recommend it for a number of very valid reasons,( Low specific gravity, low boiling point, etc) Race gas is designed for high rpm and high cylinder pressures ,AV gas for air cooled low rpm aircraft engines. AV gas is very high quality and constantly tested to insure that. Just designed for a different purpose. MY Answer ALWAYS goes like this......AV gas will work but would rather you run race gas. Either way ride the $hit out of it. If we could get YMC to lower the operating temps of these engines to about 150 degrees we wouldnt be talking about gas.
