MTX coversion to crossover?

I think its common sense, and everyone on here knows that a bigger lug track is going to cause more hyfax wear. But no set of hyfax should burn through in a few hundred miles...especially when conditions are good.

I think its the extra weight that these yamaha 4 strokes carry that burns up the hyfax. In combination with having not enough wheels, and the wheels they do have are too small.
I'm with you, I think it's not enough wheels, and the wheels being too small. Can't imagine it's the weight, since my neighbours Viking isn't as hard on hyfax as my Nytro, and it's a helluv alot heavier.

But that Viking has a bunch of wheels under it, and a short lug track, and probably isn't getting driven like a maniac I'm assuming? Slower track speed creating less heat and wear.

On my xrs the hyfax are 50% everywhere except for right where I usually stand, which is also right where the 4 front wheels are...and that spot is wore the most. I think weight has a lot to do with it...but my skid has lots of wheels, so they don't burn all the way through ;)!

Yamaha is lucky they can build such a sweeeet motor...or nobody would put up with these ridiculous problems....problems that everyone else solved in 1989.

I believe his lug height is the same as mine, but you're right, his sled is not driven like a maniac, lol.

I'd also thought that being more aggressive would help the hyfax, though, as spinning the track, especially with studs, will break up some of the hard pack and get some lube thrown around. You may be right, though, maybe driving more sedately would be better for the slides when conditions are harsh.

Are you running the A-arm mounted scratchers or rail mounted ones?

I'm trying the rail mounted side kicks. It could only get them or the rail mounted spring type locally. I know I would forget them when in reverse, so I thought I would try the sidekicks.

If I had the time to wait, I might have tried the Hartman ski mounted type.

My question to you is riding style.

Trail / off Trail boondocking / or Mountain, which will you do more?

The only time i wish my track was shorter, is when riding trails very aggressively. Because I steer with the throttle when riding at WOT, high speeds. Brake, throw the sled sideways while punching the throttle and hold on. The 153" is just too much track to do that. I've always run 136" and it's perfect for that riding style.

I went MTX because i wanted to be able to go to the mountains and not get stuck all the time.

The MTX gives you extrovert drivers,

You can move the skis to the wide position which is good for trails.

The maverick is junk until you trim the lugs down to 1.75, and then it actually does better in deep snow cause the lugs don't fold over. Running the track slightly loose solves the hyfax wear. The last 25% of Hyfax wear lasts the longest.

The rails are tip up rails, so it so turn decent on the trails.

The MTX also comes with tunnel cooler.

MTX has wide skis, which work fine for trails with 9" studboys.

Take the stock aluminum handlebar riser and cut it down in miter saw to desired height and buy shorter bolts from fastenal. Take your time measure twice and cut slowly.

You have to add the XTX Hand guards. That will cost you extra!

I think you would spend more converting the XTX for mountain duty, IMO.

Hope this helps, let us know which way you decide. There's no right or wrong answer with either, this is just the route i took.

Check out the video link in my sig.

You're right Snowman, cutting down the Maverick makes the most sense, and would money certainly make the money saved buying an MTX at blowout prices well worth the savings.
