I've had an XTX for several years now, and it's getting to be time for a new sled.

I'm toying with the idea of an MTX, and wondering what the pros and cons of an MTX vs an XTX are. Obviously the MTX is going to be slightly better off trail, and slightly worse on, but how big are the differences? Any one spend time with the two side by side?

Personally I would spend the money upgrading your xtx.

You are not going to get the best of both worlds. You can not have a great powder sled and trail sled in the same machine.

You may want to pick which is more important ( on or off trail) and take the sled in that direction and learn to deal with the other.

-MTX you may deal with more hyfax wear on hard trails so ice scratchers are a must
-MTX wont lift the skis as easy
-MTX has bigger lugs unless you get the XTX with the big lugs, It's a little more rough
-MTX has a tunner cooler which is nice
-The MTX will (obviously) not corner as well on trails, so far I havn't had any issues

It sounds like hes buying a new sled..

Good thread

Hi, I'm in the same boat. Have had the 09 xtx for 3 years, 2 inch track with Simmons gen 2 skis, wondering on the major differences, seat of pants feel that others experience. I have two xtx sled only thinking of updating one to a 153 se. Wife never leaves the trail.
Sorry for jacking your post, but I was looking for the same info as you. Also what year mtx to stay away from. I am thinking 11 or 12 is a good bet to acquire.
Thanks

I have a 2010 Nytro MTX SE and I have an Arctic Cat M7. The oldest MTX I would buy is the 2010. It has the Fox Float 2 shocks and the skid has the same with a Fox EVOL as well. I rode an 09 and handling was terrible compared to a 2010. Having said that, the nytro on a trail was quicker than my M7 in a straight line but in the corners and steep powder the nytro showed it's weight where the M7 would turn and climb like ..well.. a cat! The cat handled better in general until the 2012 season. I installed a Push turbo and changed the C&A pro skis to Simmons gen 1. The ride, handling and crazy hp make the M7 look like a total beginers sled by comparison. With the added power the nytro acts like it's 300 lbs lighter and even with the stock track it chews through powder with the skis well into the air. Sidehill riding has never been so good! Hope this helps in your buying decision!

Look at the new 2013 xtx looks pretty good, it already has the mods that lots of guys were doing to have the best of both worlds.

Your plan sounds like mine. I kept my xtx which is now virtually stock (except for skis) and bought a leftover 2011 MTX 153 this fall which I modified the hell out of. I wanted the paddle track for those epic powder days, but kept the xtx for tourning/trail duty and pack sack runs lasting a few days. Reliable, comfortable, and pretty good all around performer...no plans to part with the xtx.

Then there is the powder question.....and I agree with Sonds.... you really can't get one sled that does double duty....WELL.

From what I gather (and I got to get to the rock soon to see for myself), Western NFLD is even more suited to a powder sled than Northern NB, so a mountian machine simply makes sense. I'd say I am 60 - 70 percent boondocking powder so my first interest is a mountian sled.

Which one? Well thats a personal choice. I stuck with the MTX, because I simply love the engine and at sea level, a 140hp is enough for me. But after you replace front/rear suspension and do bunch of other "stuff" to make it a real(er?) mountian sled, not sure I would do this again...its a pile of work and $'s. I love the new 2013 RMK and the 2nd year AC 1100T will also be a good sled once the kinks are worked out.

All that said, I just finished putting the first 150 km's on my 11 MTX this week to get it past the 6000 rpm "break in" and I must confess, with the skinz front end and power claw track/AC rear suspension, and having shed maybe 50lbs, this thing is an absolute riot to drive.

I'm not a huge climber...more of a slalom rider/trees/technical and IMHO I find the nytro weight a bit of an advantage, in that it's weight tends to slow down its reaction and therefore tends to be more predictable rolling off and onto the side. I've never driven the Poo, so I can't comment, but I have driven the AC Proclimb M800 and I found it bit more of an all or nothing sled when committing to your turns.

I think in the end (this time), reliablity, torque, balance, fun factor and dealer tipped the scales in favor of the MTX. In 2 years time...it'll be different again!

Good Luck

OTM
