I'd like to remove the muffler assembly from my Apex to replace some loose rivets for the tunnel protectors (under the muffler) and for the crossover tube.
If remove the clamps shown in the photo below and the bolts holding the muffler to the tunnel, does the muffler assembly just slide out?
I have read that it is a tight slip fit for the muffler assembly to the Y-pipes. If I do remove the assembly is there a chance that I'd be able to reuse the muffler to Y-Pipe gaskets?
From what I have read it sounds like it can be difficult to reassemble everything if those muffler to Y-pipe gaskets need to be replaced. I will have my skid removed for service when I do this. I'd just like to know what I may be in for .
Thanks,
Andy

i reused mine... no prob... its a screen type "tube" gasket and as long as your carefull should have no prob...
My tunnel protectors are loose too... i want to drill straight thru and put nut/bolt... rivets will just loosen up again

Thanks Sherlock.
I'll probably do bolts & nylocks as well. Bummer that the location I need to address is under the muffler though.

well when you take off the seat... 2 of the rivets are towards the front of the muffler... dont need to take off to get to them, but there are 2 more that need muffler out... I'm going to be doing this tonight... but for the quick fix i'm just going to do the 2 i can get too without removing exhaust... drill thru, and bolt them on... I've noticed at idle i can hear them vibrating under there... kinda a flimzy set-up really..

Just did this yesterday to my buddy's sled. It was making some noise even after we did the donuts, upon further inspection when we dropped the rear skid the exhaust clamps were missing. Never were installed from the factory!!! Ordered two from Port, slid the muffler out, put on the new clamps and it slid right back in! Only thing you have to do is when you slide the muffler back to the Y pipes I had to pull down ever so slightly on the Y pipes to align the hole correctly, then it slid right into place.

I'm pretty sure that I have to pull the muffler to reattach the coolant crossover tube.
It seems like there are a handfull of rivets on my sled that have worked loose. I never had that happen on my 01 SkiDoo or even my 1990 Indy Trail. Maybe these are just kinda crappy rivets from the mfg.
I also have to tighten up my tail light. It also has some kind of cheesey plastic rivets or retainers that seem pretty loose.
The season is pretty much done now in SE WI. Here's a pic of the tear-down so far.
I'm ordering up a Ulmer front end bushing kit and going through the rear skid as well during the offseason.

Snowmobileaddic... if you take off the black plastic cover in front of your rear bumper.. the two revits for the crossover tube are there!!!.. exhaust doesnt have to come out....
And yes... i also have alot of revits that are comming loose, they all seem to if you bang these things around, they work themselves out... Stainless hardened rivets in aluminum... this happens.

I've always had a hard time getting the muffler into the Y pipes. They are a tight fit. I have my support bracket for the Y pipes in with SS nuts and bolts so 1 Y pipe can be pre-installed into the muffler and slipped into the tunnel and then I end up wrestling with the other one for half hour before I get it.

I replaced the stock muffler with the Sno Stuff rumble pack and had difficulty getting the muffler to separate from the Y-Pipe. Once I did, it may have been okay to replace with the original gaskets, but once you remove them from the pipes, they lose their original form and fold when you re-install. Had to buy new ones, installed with no problem. $30.00 for the pair.

Not to change the subject, but, how do you like the Rumble Pack? How's the sound and notice any difference in the way it runs? Was thinking of doing it but was concerned about the sound after a 300 mile day.Apex2006 said:I replaced the stock muffler with the Sno Stuff rumble pack and had difficulty getting the muffler to separate from the Y-Pipe. I love it! The sound is awesome especially when you crack it. I was concerned before I bought it about being hassled by the DNR. The great thing about this pipe is it is only a little louder than stock when idling and obviously progresses when you get on it. Through the towns drove by DNR with no problems. Get a lot of looks when I pull into the bars! Psychologically it may feel like it pulls a little harder, and it is about 4-5 lbs lighter, but I wanted it more for the sound, - not dissapointed at all!!
