hi guys
i had a real bad day! i was going out of town for a ride and my 03 rx1 mountain let loose on me! she is gone now big time! my connecting rod must of let go and lost all of her motor oil. now i have to replace alot of stuff. my coolant drained from the engine also when this happened. when this happened she made a loud vibrating sound and smoked real hard from the sides. thought she was on fire first but i took the belt guard off and looks down towards the base and saw the motor oil and it was like it was frying! and then i hooded in under the sled by the inspection plate and the oil from the base was on the snow along with some coolant. this is a disaster for me! she only has 9700 km's on it and i thought she would last me alot longer! my legs are still sore from walking! i had to walk back home about 10 miles. i am thinking twice about fixing it because it turned me away from 4 stroke motors! i think i will be goin back to two stroke yamaha's . anyone else have a similar problem like this happen to them? i dont realize it yet because it is january and we have winter until late april or mid may and i have no sled and that is all we use up here in labrador. i live on the coast of labrador and this place is isolated and doesnt have a local yammy dealer to get her checked out so i will have to do all of this tomorrow! this is a real pain in the #*$&@. i am not sure to fic it or not because there was an 03 rx1 mtn like mine and a 04 rx warrior this had happen to 2 years ago and it costed like $3000-5000 to get them fixed! i dont know if i am going to go through with it. i may just do a partout and get rid of it.

Sorry to hear about your sled problems. I wish you the best and hope it's not as serious as it looks.

well guys, took the inpection plate off today and right when i took the plate off a peice of the crankcase came out....like 2 inches in diameter! that really sucks! i think this is it for my winter. what would you guys suggest me to do? part the sled out or fix the motor? by the way how much will it cost me to get it fixed. if i got it fixed i would want all 4 new pistons, 4 connecting rods, crank, bottom part of crank case. it maybe more than this that is wrong with her because they was coolant leaking also! let me know what you would prefer.

ouch!
have you looked for used motors?? not sure if a vector motor would work, that'd give you a few more options.
hate to hear of things like this happening. goodluck

I am afraid your engine is toast. I have one with a thrown rod through the case and you need new cases/crank/pistons/rods etc and it will be close to $4000 for the parts alone. Can't buy the bottom case alone because it is matched to the top. Plus you likely have cylinder damage which is native to the top case.
It would be cheaper to part it out and buy another. Most people want over $2000 for a used motor and you can get a whole sled for around $3000. Keep your mod parts and buy a another used sled. Very sorry to hear the news. I know how you feel...I bought a four stroke so it would last 20k miles....died at 2500 miles. It turns the sled into a total loss fast. There has been a handfull of these failures out there. Mine the connecting rod nuts on #3 back off and spun bearings/tossed rod without warning. Not sure yamaha ever fixed (warranty) any of these failures but it is truely sad when it happens. Best of luck!
BTW...what are your last four digits on the vin? Mine was in the 500's and I wonder if they were built on the same day?

What kind of oil were you running? Your oil pump must have failed or you lost your oil or ran it low. The engine must have overheated somehow for the oil to look like it was frying.

I'd bet it was an oil problem to begin with.
If we had actual oil pressure gauges to monitor when to upgrade the oil as it get older, it would just be another old GMC truck still going.

You will know once it's opened up. If only one rod has damage it came loose. If all rod bearings have damage then it was likely an oil issue. The remaining three rods/bearings on mine are usable...unfortunately the crank is not.

well guys. there is a huge hole in the base of the motor. crank is no good, connecting rod is snaped off and beat up....there is block damage, and piston is no good. i think 3 pistons and rods are usable. this was on #1 cylinder on the clutch side. here are some pictures of the hole!
let me know what you thinks of it!

That motor is toast. Part out the sled and buy another one. $2400 for a motor only is ridiculous. I paid $3000 for an RX1 mountain with 1900 miles. Even came with a brand new mesh hood and some other mod parts.

On second thought I have seen bottom ends for $800 before. But that makes me wonder why someone would have the bottom end only. Not sure what is available in your area but I was unable to find a good motor for a reasonable price...so I bought a complete sled and will sell the parts I don't want/need from the two. It can be a lot cheaper than buying a used motor...especially when you can't hear run till you install it.
