Well, I don't know what I'm going to do now. On May 29th 06 I high sides my R1 on the race track (Road America). To make a long story short I had surgery last Thursday to have a herniated disc replaced with a bone, plate and screws. The doctors say no snowmobiling or motorcycle until the bone is fused (about 1 year). I don't think It's good for a sled to sit for close to 2 years unused. Really sucks too because I found a like new 06 attack with 2,000 miles on it for 7200 bucks that I was going to get for my wife to ride this year. It's going to be a long winter and summer for me.

wow that sucks, im suppose to have bck surgery but im waiting till spring. Mine only bothers me sometimes if i dont do my physical therapy

jkenosh, I'm by no means a back surgeon, but swimming has saved alot of potential backs from surgury. When I lived in NC, a friend of mine was a back specialist and refuses to cutt unless it was absolutely necessary. Many different PT forms, but he found swimming to be a great strength building activity.

I had no choice the disc between C5 and C6 was herniated pretty bad from the impact. Hitting the ground at 70 + Mph. It was so bad that the C6 nerve was being pinched, so my right arm was about 2/3 the strength of my left and my thumb/index finger were always numb. After reviewing the MRI with the doc I was lucky I didn't break my neck. I landed on the top of my left shoulder so my hea basically touched my right shoulder. The visor on my helmet was ripped off, my face was bruised and my left eye was full of blood for a month. If I could have avoided the surgery I would have. Now I just wish I would have done it sooner because now it will also effect my bike riding next summer.

Rhoag, sorry to hear about your injury. Make best of your healing time and patient. Don´t risk your health.

I broke my hip during mountainbike ride few years back. Healing took time and effort , but now it´s good as new.

I had the same surgery on December 23,2004 I missed the season and had a brand new vector that hadn't been ridden yet.

I rode 1600 miles last season with no problems

I had a doner bone and not a piece taken from my hip. I herd that is as painfull as the rest.

Mine turned out fine my doctor let me ride my sled after 8 weeks but I took it very easy. If you are healthy and a non smoker you begin fusing after 4 weeks but it can take a year.
Do everything that your doctor tells you for recovery its no joke and you will be fine.

Best of luck to you.

I had all the same probs with my left hand side. Took 2 yrs to find out it was a herniated disc C-6/C-7. I rode right up until the week before surgury. Doc said after surgery that everything so swollen and he had a hard time getting in to do the work. " I had no idea what would have caused it!!!"
Surgery was April fused the disc. Walked out of hopital next day. Oct was given clean bill of health and told to take it easy. Rode all last season with only a couple minor days with headaches. This yr I want to find a foam brace to help hold my neck, helmet.
It really didnt take that long for it too heal aslong as you take it easy right after surgery and give it the time they tell you. 8-10wks for mine and I was back to doing the fun stuff.
There where days I thought I'm great and wanted to take the brace off but just stuck it out. Now all is good.

That is one thing that I make sure I wear now is a neck brace to help suport my neck and helmet. I wear a racing one from dennis kirk I think that it is made by AGS it fits around my jacket collar and I dont even notice its there.
The only thing that bothers me is stutter bumps but it just makes my muscles tight. I will take that over constant nerve pain anyday.

I don't smoke, and have been running and lifting weights since 1988. I feel I will heel quickly, but I ride like a maniac!!! When I throw a leg over my bike 55 in the curves isn't an option and blasting down a wide UP trail at 100 on the apex is FUN!!! I guess I am getting older (45 now) and maybe this is my wake up call to enjoy motorsports at a lower rate of speed. I wil look into the neck brace for next year. I think this year is done. I may just work on my sled all winter to turn it into an aniversary issue sled, yellow and black to match my bike. Or just put a yokojunko 1" track with a ton of studs on it and just radar run at waverly beach all winter. Going in a straight line on ice shouldn't be to dangerous!
SKIDOZER I used a Cadazer bone too. I heard that when they take the bone from your hip that hurts worse than your neck. Did they go in from the front with you too? How long before the nerves came back? It sure would be nice to have normal feeling in my right arm and hand again! I told my wife my new hobby for the next year is going to be sex....the only thing that compares to riding! LOL

Rhoag, good judgement,... Glad to see your going to be able to ride yet.

RHOAG,
Take care of yourself, absolutely don't stress the fusion till at least 12 weeks then gentle, listen to your Surgeon - he will know what technique he will use and how fragile or not your spine is- there are many different techniques.
You can only hurt yourself, can't help yourself to heal faster by being aggressive. If you are in good shape and do not smoke or drink you will have the best chance of a pain free total recovery.

Take care - use 'grandma type advice', eat right. sleep right and don't do anything jarring.

The Human head weighs ~13 pounds like a bowling ball, you don't want that flopping around on a freshly fused C - spine.

WOW.. that sucks..

But then again you know the chances you are taking , and racing is very dangerous..

Take it easy and fully heal.. dont push yourslef to hard to fast..
