On October 7th, a new snowmobile water speed record of 106.0 MPH was set by OFT Racing in Alaska. After 6 long weeks, 2 engines, blown belts, tweaked suspension components and several sunken recoveries, OFT's turbo charged Yamaha Nytro finally took the gold!

OFT's quest began when a team in Norway set a record of 102.5 MPH over the summer. OFT owner and notorious wild-man Ricky Coffman wasn't having it. What he never anticipated was how difficult it would be to break 100MPH.

With some special setup of the sled and boost levels set around 16psi, the highest water speed was just 87.7 MPH; nearly 20 MPH shy of the final run. As the boost increased, so did the speed, but the triple digit mark remained slightly out of reach. It took upwards of 20psi and 125hp shot of nitrous to destroy the first engine. Wasting no time, a second power plant was immediately bolted together with ARP head studs, Carrillo rods and low compression pistons. Break-in consisted of several skips at 18psi. The final winning formula ended up being 24psi and a helpful shot of nitrous to grab those last few miles per hour.

OFT Racing doesn't stop there. They already have a few new ideas on the drawing board in case anyone tries to fire back!

Went by there today and looked at the sled. Andrew definitely knows his way around those turbo's.

This project was a very fun one, but at the same time very frustrating at times. The sled is a absolute blast to ride and the power is insane. As Sean said, we went into it thinking it wouldn't take much. But the power it takes to travel over water at high speeds is incredible. But with OFT Racings Engine and Fuel system programs we made it happen with some left on the table for next year.

This fuel system was extremely unique and very fun for me. It was completely based on our powercommander systems that we retail with amazing customer satisfaction. But this one used 6 injectors, dual PCV controllers, controlled our boost fuel and on top of that controlled 2 stages of nitrous.

For the record run we did not have to use the second, big stage of Nitrous but it was there if we needed it.

And any giveaways on the power etc on the nytro.

Always want to take the Tapex out on the water, but the idea of all the electronis etc if it goes down because of a blown belt or my own handling makes me just skip some short ones... that eats me up because im sure it would make alot of people drop their jaws :P

Unsure if this applies to a sled but for a boat there is a wall at 60mph. past that speed hp need to be increased expedensially. Jet boat with 200hp will get you to 60mph 200 more will get you 80mph 350 more will get you near 100 and 300 more will get you to 110.

Water just sucks up hp!

Much less drag on a sled vs boat. The skis are never in the water so the only thing coming in contact is the track. I would guess track speed and lug configuration are key here. Obviously the HP and Torque need to be there as well. No doubt waters weight and drag make it difficult to go fast. Will be interesting how fast they end up going down the road. Also, any idea here on distance?
 
The drag is different but the propulsion is much the same. The water trust out the back moves them forward under the principle of for every reaction there is an equal and opposite reaction. The track grabs water and pushes it out the back some of it pushes down which helps to keep the sled on top. A jet boat draws (scoops at speed) the water up into a pump and thrusts it out the back. The planing of the hull keep it on top. Both systems have parisitic drag. Even propeller driven boats push the water to move the boat forward!

I think the problem with water is its a liquid and at speed it becomes more like a solid. The harder you hit it with paddles impellers or propellers it resists and absorbes more of the force applied. Hence the amount of power needed to go faster increases at a rate higher then the speed gained.

Anyway fast on water takes tons of hp!
 
Thank you Tom! We are all busy, but that's better than the alternative. We are all looking forward to the winter but we have lots of fun planned for next summer as well.

The power was provided by 24 PSI of sea level boost going through a water to air intercooler and a little bit of nitrous to keep our charge temps as cool as possible. It was still just a 3 cylinder but was making really good power.

Trust me it in no fun to sink one of these things.
