well i'll get it out on the table right away. I'm new to both yamahas and their 4 stroke machines. Up until now ive owned only skidoo, and i just got sick of the 2 stroke smell and noise and oil..

so two weeks ago i bought an 04 yamaha RX1 with 4300 km on it. its got the 1000cc carb'd motor in it.

so i rode it first time this past weekend, and man what a difference! smoother, torque like ive never had, and just a beautiful machine.

ive got a couple questions though, because I've never ridden one before im not sure what it is supposed to do/not do.

I got on it on a long strait section, and she pulled hard up to about 165 km/h, but then seemed to taper off and not pull as hard (i thought these machines were high-end lake pullers).. also when i pin it, it revs to about 9800 or so, but it doesn't really sing in an even tone, it sorta..."rumbles" sounds good but not as smooth sounding as it runs at 1/2-3/4 throttle... normal or something off...

I though maybe the main jets were a little rich, pulled the plug out and they are a little black, but the electrode and ground strap and nice and brown... so i dont think its a carb issue..

also when your riding along at around 1/4 throttle or so..it will have a minor poping noise from the exhaust...sonds cool but it also maybe a symptom?

sorry for the super long post..hope I didn't bore any of you too much..

P.S the machine is bone stock.

thanks for any info it would be great!

The clutching was a little weird like that on the 03/04 models, could be adjusted to run a bit faster for marginally better performance, but not necessary. It shouldn't give you any rumbling when the motor is spinning real fast like that, certainly can't be the motor since it is spinning fast enough that even if it was running a little off, you couldn't possibly notice it. I suggest that you inspect the driveline.

Note: a weakness you might notice is the belts. They don't blow, but they do burn easy since the thing is geared REALLY high (they come WAY overgeared). It is a good possibility that you might have a flat spot on your belt.

You should also check/inspect/repack all your bearings starting at the one behind the secondary clutch, check/adjust chain tension and check/replace/topup chain lube.

hmm,

its a hard noise to describe. it just does sound like a bike does.. could just be a difference in intakes..

i dont think its a bearing because it doesn't shake or anything like that..the rumble is purely a noise.

Again I'll say this: There should be no rumbling noises. It should be completely smooth and uniform.
And at that kind of speed, if something is grinding, do you really think that you would FEEL it? Not likely -- you'll just HEAR it.

You *NEED* to inspect and maintain the thing. You got the thing used, so unless you go over the entire thing carefully, how will you ever know what condition it is in?

track noise

does it sound like the track is making the noise? sometimes you can hear a "howl" when your running at speed.
