New to the 4 stroke side, but thru a couple of swaps ended up picking up a 03 rx 1 with 1300 miles for my dad. As i'm moving out of state shortly(and bringing both mysrx 700's) I was wondering if there are areas of concern to look over before heading out? Also, how hard is it to add reverse to these? Was 3200$ to much? Thanks in advance. jon

For a sled that's not broken in yet that price sounds decent. Hope it was stored properly for all those years there was no miles put on it. Reverse is not a bad job, I did that to mine and there is instructions with photos in the Tech Section. Should be able to pick up all the parts for $300 give or take. For things to check over there are a few posts on here that should come up in a search. Off the top of my head:

Might want to upgrade sway bar from the 11mm stock to 12 or 13mm if the last owner didn't (might need new links to do that too)
Shim the skis
Some of them burned a little oil that year and there is a product that you can use to redcue that (Yamaha Ring Free additive)
Check skid for cracks
Look at hyfax wear
If you put in reverse you should upgrade the jackshaft locking collar to the 05 version

Thanks yammy, at dads rate it will be lucky to see 100 miles a year, so i'm not to worried about the sway bars, but the reverse would be nice for him, is that a used gear box, or a new kit?

Used. You won't get far with $300 for new parts. There are one or two part outs in the classified section you could try.

Not sure what they go for in your area but for the area that I live in up here in canada, $3200 is a great buy with only 1300 miles. I paid that for my 03 RX1 and it had over 11,000 miles. I wish I could have come across one with that low of miles.

$3200 is cheap, here in MN i have seen them for up to $4K with more miles. It all depends on where you are. And your dad will love it.

Sounds like a fair deal to me. If it doesn't have one, install a rear heat exchanger, you wil be VERY happy you did.

For the reverse install, try to find somebody selling the whole chaincase. I found one on kijiji for 200 bucks last year. I followed the instructions on this site with pictures as well as having the service manual open in front of me. Took my time and it worked out pretty well. I've never really done any serious work on a sled so it took me the better part of a day to get it installed. I had one screw up where I didn't read the instructions clearly enough and put a gear on backwards, luckily it had no serious ramifications.

It's not that bad of a job if you take your time. Looking forward to my first year with reverse too. :)
