Attention NYS snowmobilers...
Just in case you haven't heard, Gov. Paterson has proposed taking $1 million out of our trail fund and dump into the general fund to help close the state's budget deficit.
For those of you not in NYS, our registration costs are $45 per year (assuming a person belongs to club; otherwise it is $100). $10 goes to the DMV for administrative costs, $35 gets dumped into the trail fund. Each club gets a portion of the total fund, based on county and club registrations. My local club gets about $30,000 per year to help maintain and pay for our two groomers and 34 miles of trails. The trail fund usually has about $4-5 million in it. NYS Office of Parks and Historic Places also pays for our state wide insurance policy out of that fund.
Every other year it seems, governors from both parties try to tap into this fund to help fund the state's budget in the governor's executive budget plan. Thankfully, after a lot of angry snowmobiler comments, the legislature eliminates this from the budget. I dont even know why they try to take it as they are not successful and it only gets them bad publicity. This is not state tax money - it is money directly from registration fees used solely for the purpose of snowmobiling.
Send an email to your local state senator and assemblyman to make sure this does not happen...

I think you show your governor this site, showing the revenue generated from snowmobiling he may think twice.
Research conducted by the State University of New York (SUNY) showed that snowmobiling generates an estimated $476.2 million in direct and indirect revenue for New York state.

That's 1 million a year for the next FIVE years he has proposed in the budget! I believe I heard on the news that 23,000 state workers make over 100K a year. Why don't we cut back there before robbing the one group in the state who is actually paying for what they use!

Badger - we have done that with more than one governor...makes no difference.
Another point - why bother with all of this bad publicity when, as mentioned, they never get their hands on the funds AND $1 million is a drop in the bucket for NYS...doesn't seem worth the trouble.
We paid those funds...those funds are ours.

I'm surprised they haven't tried that here in Maine. They have cut about everything except their sacred cow.
