Along with the shield issue I just posted help for, I have developed a backfiring issue. It will backfire maybe a half a dozen times during a 150 miles day. It will happen when coming to a stop (letting off throttle when almost stopped) but not at higher speeds. It's random and I can't figure a real pattern. It does have 10,000 miles on it and I've never changed the plugs. Could this have anything to do with it? I don't believe it is a donut issue. I've had those before on sleds, this sounds different.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,

My guess would be bad donuts or cracked y-pipe.

Your exhaust is leaking I bet..and not the plugs. Everyone mentions donuts and ypipes mostly but at 9000 miles I had a Flex pipe crack open at a seam. I ride easy too. Others have had that happen here to. Got a used on off ebay...

check the full exhaust the silencer y pipes and flex pipes over that is almost definatly where your problem is only time i have ever seen a back fire and also while letting off is when it will happen. maybe try the rag test. only other thing that comes to mind is tors but that is not a backfire so much as a misfire so prolly not what you are talking about. I would bet dollars to donughts (pun intended lol) that it is donuts or something along the exhaust you are at the right millage for a silencer to crack.

while the sled is running block off the tail pipes with a rag (i use tennis balls) if it dies right away the exhaust is most likely oky if it stays running or slowly dies there is a leak in the system.

Yup, 10,000 miles, sounds about the right time, if not overdue for the second set of donuts and probably y-pipes if it is backfiring.

Paul up at Pat's in the UP of Michigan said if you do the copper donuts you won'y have to do those again. The flex trumpets should be checked too, they are not cheap. I have seen some used ones on ebay. According to Paul the originals were made of titanium and cost $500 each, new stainless ones are $150 each.
I replaced the donuts just last year. I'm afraid it probably is the exhaust somehow. I will try the tennis ball test and probably just get thru the year before I tear it apart. That is as long as it doesn't get worse.

I would guess you have a crack someplace...
I have a 06 apex with 2300 on did my donuts this year and new gaskets on muffler but it happens at ideal onlycheck the full exhaust the silencer y pipes and flex pipes over that is almost definatly where your problem is only time i have ever seen a back fire and also while letting off is when it will happen. maybe try the rag test. only other thing that comes to mind is tors but that is not a backfire so much as a misfire so prolly not what you are talking about.
