I see alot of guys putting Ohlins shocks on the front of their sleds. Are the stock shocks that bad on the front? Has anyone used the Fox Air shocks and if so how did you like them.

Ride your sled first before you get discouraged about the ride of your sled!

I think some guys just have too much money to waste it on aftermarket front shocks!! The guys with the 03' sleds are the ones who mostly purchase the Ohlins shocks because the shocks they had were not strait rate springs like on the 04's!

Thanks Welterracer, sence this is my 1st Yamaha I have ever owned I didn't know if the front shocks were really that bad or if guys just liked putting cooling looking shocks on. I do have to say though I am prone to doing the same thing sometimes. Just wanted to know what I should expect. I also saw you use a different sway bar, is there alot of body roll with the stock one or is it just for weight savings.

I added the sway bar because i came off of a 02' viper and want the warrrior to handle equally as well as it currently doesnt!!(havent tried the swaybar yet)

BUT DONT WORRY!! your 05' is a totally different sled and the new skid and lighter weight could and can make it handle tottally different from mine!

Personally I plan to Add OHlins or Ride Effects

Personally I plan to Add OHlins or Ride Effects (Fox are nice as well)
If you are handy my understanding is Ohlins are an easy rebuild when they are shot. This seams Like An important issue.
My stock shocks Still on my sled seemed NOT THAT GREAT after about 1000 K They still function but Really they are DEAD before 3000K
I admit my odometer is Dead now and it might be 5000 or 6000 on the odometer but the odometer says about 3000 the Stock shocks still kind of work so
That aint so bad for the Weight that I pack. I have bottomed out Lots From Day one on this sled set as stiff as it goes.
I actually would like to know which shock Can handle the heaviest load in ROUGH terrain and not bottom out.

The difference in price between the Ohlins and Fox Air shocks is only $100 per pair, with the Fox being more. At my dealer I can get them for $700 and $800.

Bossman, 1st call Port Yamaha for a better price for the Ohlins. 2nd, I was recently at a dealer and they had some cats on the floor, some with the fox and some with a standard shock and spring set up. The fox did not have the recovery as the standard. The fox seemed to stick.

The funny part was I was comparing the cat to the Yamahas, the cat was so cheap, fit and finish was different on every sled, plus the wiring harness was crap, they used a wire that was half the gauge of ours. CHEAP The reason I brought this up was the spring on the front shocks was rubbing the upper a arm. One even was catching and not allowing the shock to extend back to original position. What a bunch of pieces of crap!

Oh, by the way, I have the Ohlins, and I will never run a different shock, big difference from OEM.

Thanks Indy, by chance do you have the # to Port Yamaha. How much better price do you think they should have.

Boss, look at the top of the page, they are a sponsor here, and they are great to work with. Ask for Kevin.

Ya, I'm still working it Kevin. I expect some really BIG discounts at Novi!

The Fox air shocks are about 2 lbs lighter, and supposed to work better than the stockers in most conditions.

The Ohlins won't have the same weight advantage, (could be heavier than stock, maybe someone could weigh and confirm?), but they're also supposed to work better overall than the stockers. And they're supposed to be more fade resistant than the stockers or the Fox, a plus for guys who crash the big bumps for miles on end.

But I agree with welterracer, ride it first, the stockers are pretty good! I won't say the aftermarkets are a waste, it's just that front shocks won't have as much effect on the ride as the rear, they do more for handling and big bump capability. But they do look way cooler than the stockers!

Alot of guys do alot of riding in the magazines, and less on the snow. I used to be guilty of it too, but I don't think ANY pair of front shocks is worth 7-800 dollars. I had Ohlins on one of my SRXs and while they are definitely quality pieces, didn't think the valving was all that great. For that kind of money, it should come with free rebuilds. The Foxs make me nervous. Dirtbike mfgs tried air shocks twenty years ago, and gave up. I'm not so sure there is a magic new technology that allows them to hold air better, but they are getting good reviews. I know one thing, if one of those seals blow on a long saddlebag trip, you're screwed, so they're not an option for me. Daytrippers and mountain guys maybe, but not me. Can't you just have the stockers revalved?

on my 98srx put ohlins on in 99. havent had them fade on me once. ohlins are worth the money. they are easy to dial in. guy i ride with has the air shocks and carries a little pump with him. he can never get a good set up (all around) on them. always adding air, then taking it back out. their good at 100mph or snowcross. cant have both. imo
