I'm trying to change oil on my Phazer GT. The user's manual said to remove the crankcase engine oil drain bolt and the oil tank engine oil drain bolt.
I'm having problem with removing the crankcase engine oil drain bolt. The bolt is rounded and seem to call for an hex shape allen key type of bit to remove it. but it's tough to move it and I think I might have rounded it. The outside is round so I can't get a socket on it. Any suggestion is appreciated.
If I only drain from the oil tank engine oil drain, how much oil can I change? Would that be enough? or tilt the sled to right side to drain more?

Others will tell you for sure, but i've heard this give other guys problems, so being very little oil left in there anyway, i just didn't even attempt to drain that.

Ok, I guess, I'll only drain from the oil tank engine oil drain. Without changing the filter, I'm not going to drain all the oil anyway.
thanks
It weird that the crankcase engine oil drain bolt is designed like that. If I ever get that bolt removed, I'm going to replace a different kind of bolt so socket wrench can get at it.

that is not the best idea but can be done,as for the bolt, you must invest in a good quality allen socket type set,in metric,no other way, otherwise you end up with stripped bolts, the filter doesnt have to be changed everytime so no biggie, but i would try to get that bolt out for sure,

I am convinced that for what it is worth, It is just easier and quicker to pull the front end off to do an oil change.

I find it very easy to drain the oil and change the filter and i dont remove the front end to get it done.

If i was to do it all over again, i'd just drain the tank in fall, 5 min job, then i'd do it again towards the end of the year, for a total of twice a year. That's only about an extra 2-1/2 quarts of oil, $20.00, right?
I see where Pat is coming from, on my quads and even my chain case on my sled, i'll dump a little oil in without the drain plug and let it run straight through thinking it'll 'rinse' any crud at the very bottom out.

I think I drained about 2.3L of oil from just the oil tank. The manual said 2.45L without oil filter replacement. That's pretty good. This is the first time I change oil myself. Now I konw, it's an easy 5 min job. I would do it more often.
I did spend several hours trying to remove the crankcase engine oil drain bolt and ended up stripping it. Don't think what Yamaha is thinking when they put that bolt on.

If it stuck down below the engine there is a chance it could shear off if you hit a rock. Having it flush with the bottom of the engine is a pretty good idea

I solved the issue by welding a 5/8" nut to the %^% up allen bolt works like a charm and if i hit something that hard to break it off, I'll have bigger issues to worry about
