Hi I just changed oil in my sled yesterday and followed the service manual. I started it today and the oil level light came on. I shut it off and fired it back up and it didn't come back on.I checked the oil level once it warmed up and was right on the full line. I noticed when I bought it and checked the level it was over full. Am I checking it wrong? I warm it up fully and shut it down and check the level after 1 minute is this right?

Unless they changed it, the dip stick was ultra conservative on the 08's. If you filled the tank tot he full line and rode the sled hard or fast (say a high speed lake run) it would dump oil out the breather and make mess. The first time this happened to me in the fall of '07 I was kinda freaked out. I run my oil below the line and 3000+ miles later it still runs fine. Everytime I fill it all the way it pukes the oil out.

Did you start the engine yesterday after you changed the oil?

I figure you changed the filter at the same time?

I dunno if the oil light also comes on if you have low oil pressure too? But I think the engine stops by itself if you have low oil pressure, so basically the oil level light just means that you should check oil level?

When I change oil/filter on bikes I sometime have to start the engine and then loosen the oilfilter to get the air out of the system. I was thinking that this could be your issue but then again oil level isnt the same as oil pressure.

Gees this was maybe more confusing then informative :moon:

On my new MTX I have sometimes seen the oil light come on during climbing and turning the engine off hasnt been an option, but I didnt worry cause its only the level, not pressure. (I figure)
However I did check level and added a little oil.

Also, you dont have to completely warm ut up to check level, the reason for running it before checking level is that you want the oil to "cover" all parts (thus reducing the oil level in the tank) that it covers during operation, so that you get a correct reading.

Gees you probably knew this, sorry I`m bored at work!

Oil Level

NOTE: If the sled is right at oil level and you tip it on its side for any length of time, and then fire it up. It will take a minute for oil pressure to build back up at the sensor causing the oil light to come on. It will sometimes take a while to go out again. Your best bet is to shut it off and start it again. If it comes on a second time, you have a problem.

I did fire it up after the oil change and warmed it up and checked for oil leaks. It looked good and no oil level light came on. I did change the oil filter. I noticed that as the engine warmed up the oil level came up and I had to drain off a small amount. I put about 3 3/8 of a liter in it.

Oil Level

To check the oil level you don't have to screw the oil cap in to verify level. You just bottom it out and see where you are at. If you are screwing the cap in you may be reading high.

I only set the dipstick back in the hole without screwiong it in

Well I went for a ride tonight and all was good. I checked the oil level after I got home and it was bang on. I guess I have to chock it up to a new machine getting used to me!!!!! :drink:

Went to a rally this morning. I fired the sled up and the damn oil level light came on after about 2 minutes. I shut it down and checked the oil tank and hardly any oil on dipstick. I fired it back up and it was good. I checked oil level once engine warmed up and it was good. It is like the oil is building up in the top of the engine and not getting pumped back into the tank.It was -25c or -10F and was not plugged in. I'am running 0w30 yamalube and have only started having this problem since I changed oil.Once oil warms up abit all is good. The dealer said he didn't think anything was wrong. I don't want to hurt my new sled. Any suggestions? :o|
