My dipstick seems to be sticking or not working quite right. Is it supposed to stay up top, or float? I have a 07 Apex ER. To me, it looks like there is too much oil in it, I can see the oil a little ways from the top. Off hand I would say about 1.5 ", maybe 2".I assumed when the dealer put the oil in he would go to the specs in the book, but he just told me he went according to the dipstick.
Any way I can check beside doing another oil change? Can anyone else see their oil level that high up?
I have driven it 2 or three times for a total amount of about 110 miles, and have had no issues with oil coming out anywhere. But I also keep it in the garage where it is warm, it may be more of a problem once it gets cold and thick and I start it.
Thanks for now, ride on!

Nothing should slide up your dipstick. Check your oil with the dipstick screwed in,engine warmed up.

You don't screw your dipstick in to check it, just set it on the lip/threads and check it there.

The OP sounds like he has way too much oil if it is only a 1" to 2" inches down.

I would drain and start over, especially if you check it properly and it is above the "High" level or above the hash marks.

I warm it up, then just set it on the threads. But the low/high level indicator slides up and down, is it supposed to, or is it suposed to stay in one spot?
I thought the first time I checked the oil after the change it showed perfect, now I can't remember, maybe it was before I brought it away.

Not sure what the RTX's are like, but I would assume the same or close to the same as the rest ?

Mine is one solid piece, it has a round diameter part that is slightly smaller than the oil tank filler hole and the flat measuring part is attached to that so it can't move.

You first pull it out and wipe th oil off dry and clean then set gently back in the hole without screwing it in, pull out gently and see where the oil level is.

Your's should not move or float or you will never be able to accurately measure you oil level.
Look and see if you can tell if something broke or where the 2 pieces came apart, and if possible, post a pic of it?
Did you own this sled since new or is it new to you?

Here are a few pics. If it works.

Your last pic, or 003 is what it is suppose to look like, it is not suppose to move up or down on the stick itself.

It has come unglued or unattached and needs to be repaired or replaced as you could be doing damage to your motor if you have excess oil in there.

See if you can tell how is suppose to stay stationary on the stick itself?
And I would also be draining your oil and checking your screen in the bottom of your oil tank asap.

Get this fixed before your next ride, don't ride it until you can verify proper oil level.

Good luck. ;)!

The bottom of the sensor has unsnapped and fallen in the tank. I had it happen once. You can remove the oil tank and fish the bottom of the sensor out of the tank, it just snaps together. If you pull the dipstick out crooked you can cause this.

Guess I will be making a few phone calls tomorrow.
Thanks again!

No problem. ;)!

Just a word of advice, if your dealer filled it up to the floating level, then seriously question this dealer/mechanic if they actually know what they are doing and if they have worked on Yamaha sleds before?

I am betting that you have at least 2, maybe more, extra liter's of oil in your engine/tank, which is not good!

vx700xtc, thanks! I will have to check that out. I don't remember having problems pulling the dipstick out, but I did have problems lately trying to get it back in properly, I bet I am bumping the piece in the tank.

Irv, I have never had complaints about him, or heard of any either, and I know many that go there. You are right though, I have no idea if he has had many or any sleds like this come through his shop. I will talk to him and see what happens.

You mentioned you had no excess oil come out anywhere? I would be really surprised if your air box/filter foam is not completely saturated in oil?

I also have no idea what engine damage could result from this much excess oil but I do know it is not good!

Be sure to run that by him, especially if a problem creeps up later.

Let us know what he says.

Good luck. ;)!

Yes, putting it in is when you can knock the bottom off.

its a dry sump a little extra oil won't hurt a thing....id rather be over than under..

and yea that dipstick is messed up

The main problem with that dip stick is it will no longer tell you when you oil level is low in the oil tank that is what that float is for. over full is way better then under full as a dry sump engine it takes what it needs from the tank and returns it when it is done the level is to ensure there is enuff to allow it to cool properly. i have seen a dip stick just like yours and most times it is from being dropped once the plastic botom piece is cracked it wont stay on any longer. as stated before drain the oilhi
and remove the botom port to make sure that piece is not floating around in the oil tank causing oil restriction. when you fill it back up be sure the slide is all the way down the dip stick and dont screw it in at all just set it on the threads and fill to the top of the hatch marks on the dipstick with a warm motor or at least ran for 1 min to be sure the motor is full. replace that dipstick as soon as funds allow you to and check oil frequently till it is replaced.
