It doesnt matter what the call it, the '06 lineup is great.
I was surprised that they kept the SX Venom and Venture 600 in the lineup, but Im sure they did it to have am inexpensive, entry level sled and for those who prefer a 2-stroke.

RX-1 is known as a tank to everyone but the guys on these boards. If you don't own one, it is a tank. Actually even if you do, it is still a tank compared to most sleds out there.
Yamaha had to get rid of it for that reason alone and it will pay off for them.

They are showing weights this year and sure they shaved a few pounds but they added FI and a radiator and put most of that savings back in. I'd say the 06's are very close to what the 05's are. Nothing like the big reduction they had over the 03 and 04.
So your point makes no sense. Based on your logic would'nt the new sleds be tanks also????

i'd like to see doo make a 4 stroker that is 10 heavier than its mach z...last time i checked the mach weighed in at 523lbs...new apex weighs 533 w/o reverse. 10lbs isnt that much to get all worked up over. if u want light get a firecat...if u want durable and dependable get a yamaha

Well it is known as a tank because in 03 they put the wrong skis on such a heavier sled. They should have put a wider ski on it and then it would not have gotten stuck all the time and it would also plane better in the deeper stuff. It is in fact a major design flaw that gave the Rx-1 its one ton image and one they could not shake. Notice the names given these sleds now, I think they will be a lot harder to give them negative rhyming nick names. So it is in fact Yamaha's own fault the RX-1 got that nick name.

Not necessarily they also got rid of the lines running to across and back to the engine as I would imagine both running board exhangers are gone along with all the plumbing. Just a bike type radiator and fan now. If so you better buy some really good boots.

Bet ya $5 the side exchangers are still there and the crossover plumbing.
The radiator is instead ot the optional rear exchanger because of overheating in marginal conditions.

If there is a radiator, this thing should never overheat.

Good info from Yamaha!
Weight a Minute - Let's Put the Pounds in Perspective
The 4-stroke snowmobile weight myth is revealed.
Did you know 1 US gallon of gas weighs more than 6 pounds?
This means that a snowmobile with a 12 US gallon fuel tank weighs an additional 70 lbs. when full of gas (up to 10% of a sleds total weight).
Yamaha 4-stroke sleds, with many additional benefits, are within 3% to 6% of similar, competitors' 2-stroke total sled weights.
Can you feel that your sled is 60 to 70 lbs. lighter when you squeak into the gas stop with a near empty tank? Maybe a little.
Can you really feel the weight difference of riding with a half a tank of gas? Unlikely.
A half tank of gas weighs about 30lbs.
Did you know that some of Yamaha's 4-strokes are within 30lb. of a competitive 2-stroke.
Read on...
Simply put, the actual weight difference between a Yamaha performance 4-stroke and a competitor's 2-stroke with similar features, equates to about half a tank of gas. Chassis rigidity, suspension design, calibration and balance will have far more impact on the handling and ride.
Some people are very focused on how much the claimed weight of a snowmobile is. They actually believe that a few pounds will make a decisive difference to the overall performance. More than likely, they have not had a chance to try one of our new 4-stroke sleds.

Loose Cannon, I've never felt the difference when riding with a full or empty tank.

LooseCannon nailed it.
One more major point. With these 4 strokes you have to consider that at all times you are carrying 2 gallons less fuel than a 2 stroke.
That is 12lbs that nobody thinks about,

How about a 12pack vs. a case!

Okay then, lets now focus on rider weight. 8)
