Need some help and advice, I want to paint my Ohlins shock springs black and wondering what is the best way to get this done so they stay durable in their use..... :yam:

powder coat? I would just have them sandblasted, and then buy some good quality (automotive) spray paint, hang them from the ceiling and spray, (primer first). You could also instead of sandblasting use a spray stripper, but it be alot more messy.

You can buy paint called Endura or Imron. They use this to paint Airplanes and Helicoptors. I have painted several sleds, tunnels, trailing arms and springs. This paint is extremely tough, very shinny and the flexing of the spring does not affect it at all. I do alot of bush wacking and have NEVER had any issues with any of my sleds on any of the parts. This is the ONLY paint to use on a sled due to the amount of abuse we put them through.

LB, I painted the a-arms on my buddys vmax at the beginning of this season. I just lightly sanded the rust, cleaned, primed and sprayed using an automotive paint (silver). They looked new and held up all season. I didn't remove, I just used a piece of cardboard and some paint tape to deal with the overspray. We ride in alot of brush.

LB, I forgot to mention that I also clear coated them with several coats after painting. That may be the reason they held up to the abuse.

For me time is money, so I did the powder coat thing... Everything is still perfect, with the exception of more parts to be done...

Do not sand blast springs have them acid dipped sand blasting may take the temper out of the steel. Powder coating or chrome plating is the best idea.

painting springs

There used to be a product for coating the handles of tools with plastic. You just dipped the tool in the can and it left a nice plastic coating similar to the ones on plier handles or channel locks.I haven't seen it in a while but I wonder if the spray on bed liner material would work.It is tough comes in several colors and flexible. I would be leary of the powder coat oven ruining the temper of the springs.

I have painted with Imron before. Good stuff. Make sure you wear a MASK!
