My nephew has an 07' Phazer FX and loves it!!! Tonight he called me and said that there was a really yappy kid in school with a 96' ZR580 that has been bugging him to race. He said normally he wouldn't care wether he won or lost but this kid is a real braggart and has been razing him all week and it's got him worried.
Anyone have any thoughts on how the Phazer would stack up against the ZR580?
Thanks guys!

If Phazer can get traction it should beat it.At least up to 80.Normally the Phazer will easily get the traction. But never know how the other guy is setup.Deeper snow and for sure the Phazer will have the edge.Probably at top end even.

Thanks cannondale! Ya, I'm concerned about traction ,he's pretty small for his age and only weighs about 100lbs soaking wet LOL, so it's tough for him to get traction on hard pack. We've increased the preload on the centre shock so it is better but I'm thinking he'll need studs in the track if he wants to get the hole shot.
Thanks again for the heads-up, I really had no idea how those ZR's performed or what he was in for if he tangled with one!

The old ZR 580 is good for about 95 hp, if it's a first year batteryless EFI they pull clean and hard. The '96 was also pre ETT (extended travel tunnel) so it has the low slung 8 inch rear suspension. When new this sled would smoke my Phazer (seat of the pants memory), but that sled has a few birthdays now and may not run as well anymore. I rode cats of that era and they were slot cars on the trail and dragsters on the lake. I would rather see how well it runs first before I lined up with someone who won't let up about kicking your butt.

That's a heck of a lot more Hp than I was thinking it would be! Yipes, I'm glad I asked!
My brother is a pilot and has a nice long grass airstrip that we use for snowmobile racing and that's where they are planning to have it out. I'm thinking the best tactic is for my nephew to take his dad's 05' RX1 or my SRX and have the yappy kid a few runs with it first to take the cockyness out of him, then he shouldn't be quite so yappy if he beats the Phazer. Hopefully, if they trade wins, maybe they can just go out and do some sledding and have fun with minimal hurt feelings.
They were supposed to go out today but I'm not sure if it's still on or not, I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for all your help!!

It will beat it unless its modded.Dont worry. Those things just felt faster than they really were.

I have an 07 phazer FX and had a 96 ZR440. I didn't get to race them as I sold the ZR before I picked up the phazer. Based on a seat of the pants comparison I wouldn't be too confident about beating the ZR. If the race is short and only up to speeds of about 50 maybe 60 mph, I think the phazer would win. Over those speeds and I think the ZR would reel it in and win. My phazer is really quick up to 60 mph but then acceleration drops off fairly quickly. My ZR was good for 95 in a radar run and my phazer won't do that. It should make for an interesting race and I would like to hear the results. I have raced my phazer against my buddy's F6 and it would stay with him up to about 50 mph then the F6 would start walking away. My buddy though it was faster than his friends F5.

Yes top end on ZR will be higher unless the snow is deep.If its deep the Phazer 4st torque will pull more top end than that 580.

The Phazer will not have a chance to beat it on top end

But 0-60 the Phazer can hang with my ZR but after that the 80hp shows

Got to remember the Phazer is an 80hp sled, you can only go so fast with 80hp

btw 96 ZR580 EFI does NOT have batteryless, that start in 97

Only way to find out is to race.Last week I didnt have any trouble beating a ZRT600 everywhere even on top end.But snow was deep so his picks werent doing anything and my track (freeride) was a advantage.

Well, no race this weekend. The boys just were on their way out yesterday and the Cat quit, they towed it back home but so far haven't figured out the trouble. It had done this last weekend and they tracked it down to the battery that powers the EFI, they said they put in a new battery and it ran fine but now it's doing the same thing. They're going to try another battery to see if that works. I'm not too familier with Cats but apparently it's a little [litheum?] battery? They are also going to replace the wiring harness while they are waiting on the new battery, hopefully it'll be ready to run by next weekend.

See you won once already!Make sure to remind him ;)!
Hahahahahaha!!!! I'm sure that will come up!

It really doesn't seem fair to me to be putting a 500cc 4-stroke against a 580 liquid cooled 2-stroke in a drag race [the 450cc 4-strokes race in the same class as the 250cc 2-strokes in moto-x after all] but the l'il Phazer does pretty well for itself.

Latest news: he brought the Cat to the dealer to fix and ended up trading it for a 95' EXT 580 EFI. Says it's waaay faster than the ZR! I'm thinking it should be about the same unless the old ZR had more issues than just the EFI battery :dunno:
