I pulled my head off this past weekend and ported the head, throttle body, header pipes and the boots between the head and throttle body. Everything went well. I have also split the head gasket and will be putting everything back together this weekend. I will get some pics and post them before it goes back together. I am going to put it on the dyno next month. I will post the results. You would be surprised how bad the head looks from the factory. The transition between the valve seats and the ports is very bad. I think there would be significant gains to be had by only smoothing all of the imperfections and not even porting the whole head.

i was thinking about that too until we got a few inches of snow the other night, radar run on the 9th of dec too so maybe next summer,am vary interested in leaving motor stock looking but tweaks inside would be nice, how much would splitting the head gasket raise the compression, could boost the compression up and run super, but would this help or hurt top end running

I am not sure how much splitting the gasket brings up the compresion. I am guessing 15-20 psi. It should be good for about 5 hp. It will not hurt top end. Raising compression gives you HP everywhere. I would bet that splitting the gasket, advancing the timing and just cleaning up the head a little would be good for 10 hp. I did a full porting because I plan on installing cams next year.

Splitting the head gasket on an apex will bring you to 12.25:1 which is almost half a point over stock. That is probably good for about 2-2.5hp.

Charged RTX,

Did you do the work yourself? Just wondering what the cost of the port job and clean-up would run... How difficult is it to get the heads off? Enough room in there...

any info on this porting deal will be greatly appreciated,if you guys have good luck maybe more of us will follow, what is the cutoff on compression to run regular gas?i hate to spend the extra for super but if i could get 10 hp i think i could swing the extra cost on the fillups,i really hate to mess with the motor but if its not that bad maybe i will, this year im trying a few tricks to allow the track to roll better cause i think this will free up some hp,i will report on that when i get it set up and tested ,radar runs in 2 weeks then set up for trail

Five HP has been proven on the dyno with just splitting the gasket. I did the porting myself with some tips from a Pro. If you have the correct tools and are fairly handy it can be done in 2 full days. This is pulling the head, doing the porting, assembling the head adjusting the valve lash and putting it all back together. Now that I have done one I could probably do it in half the time. I think that it came out well. The dyno will tell the true tale. I am also going to be advancing the timing so i will be running 93. I would say that with just the gasket you may be able to run 89. I would talk to an expert about that.

I am still getting it dialed in. I had to bring the airbox back to stock. I picked up 600-700 rpms from the Fix lid to the stock lid. That blew my mind because it absolutley ripped with Fix lid and my other mods. I have a Boondocker controller on order to get my fuel dialed in. It is very strong now untill about 80mph then it falls off because the fuel is off. I raced a mach Z this weekend in a large groomed field. By about 80mph i had about 3 lengths on him. then he started to pull on me. By about 100 he was coming by. This is also with a 121 hacksaw. i think when I get the fuel straight It should be faster all the way through and a lot better on top.

Would like to here your updates after fuel controllers is installed.

By going back to stock lid your thinking a lean condition ?

No changes to the stock exhaust ?

I have the timing advanced 6 degrees manually. I think this is the best comprimise between midrange and high rpm power. I will be finally doing some good testing next weekend and will give a full report.

I did some testing this weekend with the boondocker controller. The sled is running great. I had to reduce the fuel on top about 5% and clutch it 11,000 to 11,100. I kicked the crap out of a lot of sleds including two XP 800 which where not even close. I think I may still be able to gain a little with some more airbox mods to the bottom. Now it is stock with 7 7/16 holes near the stock opening. I am going to open them up to 9/16 to make sure I am taking full advantage of the porting. I hit 91.6 in 660' with trail studs at the radar run. I am also running 87 octane fuel. Ran great even on long runs.
