Anyone out there in Yammy world using the Drift innovations action camera. I am trying to decide if I need the HD1080 or will I be satisfied with the HD 720P model. Some reviews I have read said that most guys with the 1080 us it on the 720 setting. Seems kind of pointless to buy a 1080 and not use it fully. Some others think the 720 was a better camera.

I just want to video some of our rides. I don't think any of the POV cameras are perfect. I can get better video with my small sony handy cam but no easy way to fix it to the helmet.

The 720 is being sold for a little as $75 and the 1080 for a little as $195. I have to buy 2 but I want to get some feed back from actual users. Thanks.

Here is a decent discussion on this topic

I have been a "helmet cam" user since 2000. I destroyed numerous "lipstick" cams over the early years and lost my treasured Elura 50 mini8 cam when I sunk my Apex GT. Initially I felt the GoPros were just a fad as the form factor was so goofy. A customer actually gave me my first GoPro 960. The interface is shitty and not intuitive and the battery life is not great. Other than that I pretty happy with my current H3 White. I bought it early and initially the firmware was not ready and limited its functions. Bt now I have a remote controlled camera I can mount in crazy locations and photo and film underwater if I want to. Plus finally the FW and app allows for viewing the media in the camera via wifi on a tablet or smartphone. I have found the to be very durable including retrieving one after it flew off it's mount on my A-Arms at about 80MPH. I've seen videos of them survive falls from skydivers too.

As for the resolution, I rarely use more than 720p due to file size. Finally, a little POV goes a long way, and as a trail rider the video can be a little boring until an oh #*$&@ moment happens. Even so, if you're not using one you won't get those moments.

I too have been using many different helmet cams/ lipstick cams / and the good old Sony High 8 and digital 8 cams for many years.

You will never get the quality out of a handy cam that these new cams can produce. 720p and 1080p are worlds better than any handycam. The biggest thing the old cams have on these new "disposable" cams is lens quality and optical zoom.

The market has shifted from overall picture quality to convenience. And nobody wants to carry a camera with a lens that weighs more than a couple GoPros. (no bashing intended at all, as I know where you are coming from) Watch a few of Yellowknifes videos and you will see what a true HD camera with lenses can record!

There are tons of options out there, and it's all based on what you wanna spend, that's for sure. Watch some of the features of the 1080 cams (your original question) My newer 1080 version of the 720 cam I own will only do motion control in 720. But the picture quality for moving sports like sledding and skiing are so much better with that motion control enabled. So it was more than just bumping from one res to the other.

That and the point of storage is important as well. memory cards are always getting larger, and it's easy to carry more than one. Editing all the boring stuff out is where the work comes into play.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

i have a V.O.I. POV.. its a great unit.. also has a remote i keep on my bars.. just tap and record..

I like my go pro allot i always use the 720 setting on it as the picture is more stable in that setting 1080 shows allot more bouncing around that said I dont know if a 720 only capiable cam would do as good a job on stabilization. the go pro seems to be bullet proof mine has been thru a prety good crash and the footage was priceless and it never missed a beat. I dont use it as much as i did when i first got it but still enjoy it mostly this time of year when we are itching to get back out and ride.

I'm also interested in a Drift camera, which I plan to put on my Xmas list this year. I've been using an older GoPro (the basic Hero) for a few years, which I've been relatively happy with. I tried the new Hero Black last year and ended up returning it to the store. While the picture quality was great and much improved over my older Hero, the buggy firmware, poor battery life, and buggy wifi were too many strikes against it. One of the features I like about the Drift HD Ghost is the "loop mode", where it will record continuous video and overwrite previous footage until you press a button when something "exciting" happens, thus saving memory card space (and editing PITA). That feature seems pretty cool when riding the trail for many hours. Like biffdotorg said, editing all the footage is where the real work starts.

i have the 1080 hd , works great ,even at -25 and 120 kms a hour , lots of mounting modes included ,small remote velcroes to my glove for start and stop ,also has loud beep to tell you your recording , you can hear it through your helmut

I think I might go with the 1080 p version just for the sake of the external mic. The 720 does not have that option so the wind noise is louder. I know a lot of guys dub music over the video and I may do that also once I get the hang of it but it is nice to hear the engine sound also.

I have the drift innovation camera. It is awesome is all I can say. Makes great video, easy to use, remote works great. You will not be disappointed.

Went with the 1080 P version and now just waiting for them to show up.
